Pediatric Updates, Opportunities &
Events
Wednesday, 15 July 2020 | Issue 26
Dear Cha pter Members,

I received some unexpected, but exciting, news last week. The Nevada AAP Chapter has been growing over the past 2 years, so much so that we are now, officially, classified as a "medium" sized chapter by the AAP with 202 voting members! I am so appreciative for our members for all you do to improve pediatric outcomes in Nevada! If you'll allow me to paraphrase Margaret Mead, I have no doubt that our small, but growing, group of committed pediatricians can change Nevada! Thank you for all you do!

Be well,
Lee

URGENT: This Monday, July 20, is the deadline for applying for Federal Medicaid and CHIP Provider Relief Fund. Learn more below.
UPDATES
Provider Relief Fund Deadline Monday
The July 20 deadline for applying for the Medicaid and CHIP Provider Relief Fund is rapidly approaching.

In addition to this 2-page Fact Sheet issued by HHS, the American Academy of Pediatrics has a number of resources for members including a step-by-step application guide, and a FAQ page,

Nevada AAP Executive Director Leann McAllister is also a certified business mentor at SCORE and welcomes members to contact her if they need individual help with the application process.
Nevada Special Legislative Session
The 31st (2020) Special Session of the Nevada Legislature began on July 8, 2020 and the cuts to education and Medicaid being considered have filled Nevada AAP members across our state with worry and concern.

On July 9, Nevada AAP Executive Director Leann McAllister spoke during Public Comment recommending new revue from taxes on sugary drinks and tobacco products to use to prioritize Medicaid payment rates to protect access to care for children in Nevada. The written public comment submitted can be downloaded by clicking on the image.

The Nevada AAP also joined with fellow leading advocacy groups in Nevada to co-sign a letter authored by the Nevada State Medical Association that details why Nevada lawmakers should not be cutting Medicaid (read full letter by clicking on image).

Now more than ever, pediatric voices are needed to educate the public and elected officials as to the reality of what these cuts would mean for pediatric care in Nevada. Anyone can call in during public comment time to give a statement. To give a statement on behalf of the Nevada AAP, it must be approved in writing by the Nevada AAP Executive Committee.

Nevada AAP members wanting to learn more about how to give public comment are welcome to contact Executive Director Leann McAllister to set up a brief one-on-one training session.

Breastfeeding Resources
The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently updated their Resources to Support Breastfeeding Families to include a more robust section on supporting breastfeeding during emergencies and disasters.

In addition, the Nevada AAP has recently partnered with Nevada WIC to help bring more attention to the relatively new WIC Breastfeeding Support page.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding as the sole source of nutrition for babies for about 6 months and can be continued for as long as both mother and baby desire it. Learn more at the AAP's Healthy Children Breastfeeding main page.
KidTalk App
A research team at the University of Maryland and Boston College are studying the effects of social distancing on children and families and have asked our help in promoting a family-friendly app to help them gather data.

As part of a NSF-funded project, the researchers aim to recruit thousands of families from across the country to participate in their study by using an app they've developed. Families use the app, KidTalk Language Scrapbooking, to fill out short surveys and make recordings of their child talking and share them anonymously with the researchers. The KidTalk app also creates a downloadable "language scrapbook" that parents can keep.

To learn more visit the website KidTalkScrapbook.org. Also on the website you'll find downloadable fliers to share with your patients.

New Board Starts Jan 15, 2021 (2-Year Term)

Nevada AAP Board of Directors 2021 - 2022
Now is the time to start thinking about running for a leadership position on the Nevada AAP 2021 - 2022 Board of Directors.

The Nevada AAP is almost entirely run by members who volunteer their time and talents resulting in improved pediatric outcomes in Nevada and leadership skills for the volunteer. Our Board of Directors Leadership Policy is designed to accommodate the busy work lives of our members. We appreciate the time our volunteers give to improve pediatric outcomes in Nevada.

Current Board members are welcome to reapply for their current board seat or explore a new role that interests them. There are many opportunities for leadership as we often only have one candidate per role.

Per our Chapter Bylaws, the entire Nevada APP membership will be invited to vote for two positions if we have multiple nominations: Vice President and Secretary/Treasurer.
Although we are all practicing "social distancing", there are still online opportunities to "get together" to network and learn together. We may be physically separated, but not emotionally or intellectually.
