December 2019/January 2020
Dear Marist Families,
For those of you that are new to Marist, this newsletter covers both December and January, right up to and including midterm exams. Keep it handy for events and announcements that extend until the end of the first semester.
The season of Advent begins on Sunday, December 1. Despite the headlines which zap our hope and drain our optimism, let us not lose sight of the only headline that matters: God sent us His only Son to express his deepest love for humanity. Jesus came that we might have life and have it to the full. Like Mary, our good Mother, let us make room in our hearts for her son, Jesus. May we bring Him to birth through our love for one another.
One way to enrich the high school experience is to join a club, activity, or sport. In a recent weekly bulletin, I published the following list of extra-curricular opportunities, adding an email address of the mentor:
Reach out! Joining usually results in better grades, more friends, and an enhanced profile when it comes to college applications. I also highly recommend service opportunities for the same reason. Thinking of volunteering? Check out

Whenever you ask a student, an alum, a teacher, or a parent what makes Marist special, you'll invariably get the same answer: the feeling of family. I've met strangers, visiting the school for the first time, who tell me that there's something "different" about this place; that they felt it as soon as they entered. They say the "spirit" is palpable. This spirit comes to life with a wonderful Marist tradition which occurs the week before Christmas break. Called Spirit Week and culminating in the Champagnat Games, you have to experience it to believe it! You'll have to ask your sons and daughters all about it. It's frenzied, it's competitive, it's fun . . . it's Marist.
Along with the administration, faculty, and staff at Marist High School, I wish you
God's choicest blessings at Christmas and throughout the New Year.

Academic News

STUDY HALL:
Began November 13th for any student that failed two or more subjects. This mandatory supervised quiet time will enable students to: start their homework, read or review for the next day, and obtain tutoring. Encourage your son/daughter to take advantage of this valuable time to turn around a failing grade.
NHS TUTORING:
Available for all students Monday -Thursday in the LMC and the Study Hall Rooms from 2:40pm - 3:40pm. This is a reliable source of extra help. Be sure your son/daughter takes advantage of this free service.
PROGRESS REPORTS:
Progress Reports provides grades-to-date at the mid-point of the marking period. They will be ready on December 5th and will be sent out via email. Please be sure that the school has your correct email address. If you have changed your email address, please contact Mrs. DePoalo and let her know. (Ext. 201 or

SECOND MARKING PERIOD:
Ends on January 17th. Reports Cards will be mailed home on January 30. Remember: anyone who has an outstanding tuition balance will not receive a report card. Please make sure your address is up-to-date; if you have a change of address, please contact Mrs. DePoalo.
MID-TERM EXAMINATIONS:
Mid-terms count for 10% of the final course grade. Exams will be administered January 21-23. Students will not be given a make-up date without a doctor's note. Failure to present a doctor's note will result in a student receiving a grade of zero for that exam.

MID-TERM PREPARATION:
There are two aspects to the review process: What the teachers and students do together in school and what you and your son/daughter do at home.
* In-school preparation begins Monday, January 13th and extends through Friday, January 17th. Teachers will outline what material is to be studied, provide study guides and review sheets, and in some cases, begin the mid-term exam process.
* At home, please be sure to encourage your son/daughter to set aside a study time each evening during review week. Ask to see the review materials and contact the teacher if your son/daughter tells you that review materials were not provided. Please insist that your son/daughter prepares each night before the scheduled exams and allow them to have a study area that is free of distractions. Encourage your son/daughter to get at least 8 hours of sleep before each exam, eat breakfast before each exam, and arrive to school on time for the exam.
We look forward to very positive results from each of our students. Students will be dismissed at the conclusion of the second exam each day and buses will run after each exam. No bus transportation will be provided on Friday of exam week.

ADVENT:
Sunday, December 1st marks the beginning of the season of Advent. During these four weeks, we reflect on and prepare for the celebration of Jesus' birth on Christmas Day. We continue to ask for your generosity with our next fundraiser, the annual Coat Drive.
COAT DRIVE:
During Advent we will help with the JERSEY CARES COAT DRIVE. Receptacles will be in Campus Ministry. Please send your student in with any gently used, clean coats and or winter clothing to be distributed to those in need. We are trying to emulate what the Catholic Worker founder, Peter Maruin, said; "The coat in your closet belongs to the poor."
CHRISTMAS PRAYER SERVICE:
Our Christmas Pageant will take place on Tuesday, December 17th at 9:45am. If you are free, you are invited to celebrate Jesus' birth with our entire school family. Traditionally, the Senior Retreat Leaders present a very stirring pageant, re-enacting St. Luke's story of the Nativity.
CULTURE OF SERVICE:

ENCOUNTER:
The next Encounter for Seniors is Jan 16-19. This is the second opportunity this year to enjoy this type of retreat. It is a retreat where both Seniors and Juniors have an opportunity to review their lives, their relationship with God and their future goals. MARTIN LUTHER KING HOLIDAY:
Is celebrated nationally on Monday January 20th. There is no school on that day. Marist strongly encourages students to devote this day to service in their local communities. See Campus Ministry or the Jersey Cares website (jerseycares.org) for ideas. Marist memorializes Martin Luther King with a prayer service and a guest speaker on Wednesday, January 29th at 9:45am. Join us if you can.

HBCU College Fair:
On Friday, November 21st, 13 seniors took advantage of the opportunity to meet with college reps from Historically Black Colleges and Universities at NJIT for the HBCU College Fair. The students got to sit in on a panel of HBCU alumni for a
motivational talk, and then were able to meet with reps, learn more about each school, and ultimately apply. The Seniors that attended returned to school that same day with multiple acceptances. Congrats to all who took this opportunity to show that you are ready for the next step on your journey!
PSAT Scores:
In October, the Junior class took the PSATs. The scores will be released December 10th. Counselors will be in Junior religion classes that week to help them get signed up on College Board, if they don't already have an account, and link it to their scores. We will also give them a tour of the website, to see what free resources are out there for the students. The Freshmen and Sophomores also took the test. Their counselors will review those scores with them and give them pointers on what to do next.
SAT'S:
Saturday, December 7th is the next sitting for the SATs here at Marist. Many Seniors are taking it for the second or third time. The next sitting will be March 14th here at Marist. The deadline to apply for that sitting is February 14th. We recommend that Juniors who are currently in Pre-Calculus or Calculus take advantage of this sitting of the SAT. All other Juniors who are in Algebra II currently, we recommend waiting until the May or June SATs to ensure that you have learned the full set of skills needed to be successful at the SATs. All students are encouraged to take advantage of the free practice tools found at
www.collegeboard.org
.
College Application Process:
O
ver half of the Senior class has completed the application process, with many more putting the finishing touches on their applications before pressing that submit button. There are 19 students that have turned in their acceptance letters to 25 colleges and universities to date, and have accrued close to $500,000 in scholarships already! We know many schools will be sending out their first batch of acceptance letters soon, so PLEASE, make sure your son/daughter brings in the letter or email when that happens. We will copy it and return the original to you.

With Christmas fast approaching, our annual Spirit Week and Champagnat Games are just around the corner. For those new to Marist, Spirit Week is a time in which each year level unites in friendly competition to see which one has the MOST school spirit. Trees are decorated, costumes are worn, and we all join together in the spirit of the season to celebrate our Marist heritage and the birth of Christ. Below is the calendar for the week. The highlight of the week occurs on Friday, when we host our annual Champagnat Games. Year levels compete for the prestige of the title of Champions. This year we are able to provide Champagnat Games shirts free of charge, and will be collecting sizes during the first week back from Thanksgiving break.

I would like to congratulate all coaches and student/athletes for their hard work and dedication this past Fall Season. You have all made the Marist Community very proud.
Winter season is here. Athletic physicals will be needed for students wishing to participate. A SPORTS PHYSICAL PACKET can be obtained and downloaded online through the Marist website. It can also be obtained in the main office or by each individual winter coach.
No student will be allowed to participate in any sport unless an athletic physical is completed and returned before the start of the winter season.
Tryouts for all winter sports will be announced in school. Please come out and support our student/athletes. Did you know you can access schedules and scores through the Marist App?
