Here's the latest information about things going on in the Borough of Pompton Lakes this month, assembled and produced by the Public Information Department.

As the Borough prepares to celebrate its 125
th
Anniversary, I am reminded of the development and growth the community has experienced throughout the years. I am honored to be a part of the Borough’s continued history and redevelopment within the community.
The first major redevelopment project, Lakeside Commons Apartment, is nearing completion and this four story facility offers 52 one and two bedroom rental units. The complex will assist with the stabilization of taxes along with stimulating growth within the downtown area as it is within walking distance to shops, eateries, entertainment and local transit system.
As the lead agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) partners with States and communities in an effort to collect data to identify flood hazards and assess flood risks. The data collected is incorporated into flood maps known as Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) that supports the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and are the basis for community floodplain management regulations and flood insurance requirements. Recently, the Flood Hazard Mapping study for the Borough of Pompton Lakes was completed and the flood maps have been revised. The Borough continues to object to changes within the revised maps and has appealed the revisions. The Borough has received the Letter of Final Determination and the revised FEMA Flood Maps will take effect on April 17, 2020. The new revised maps change the mapped flood hazard as well as building and insurance requirements.
In an effort to alert residents of the FEMA mapping changes, the Mayor and Council, along with the Flood Advisory Board will host a presentation for Flood Hazard Mapping Revisions and Updates. The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 7:30 and Nick Agnoli, Engineer and Borough CRS Consultant will identify the map changes, flood insurance risks and mitigation actions. I strongly urge residents to attend this presentation along with contacting their insurance company to further explore flood insurance options.
As winter continues, I would remind all residents to remove their vehicles during snow events until the roadways are cleared, basketball hoops should be removed from roadways, remove snow from your sidewalks and do not throw snow into the roadways. If your home is located near a fire hydrant clear the snow around the hydrant. Please be safe in the winter months.

The County of Passaic consists of many Divisions and residents from Pompton Lakes are afforded the opportunity to take advantage of County services and programs. The Passaic County Administration Building (973-881-4000) is located on 401 Grand Street, Paterson and the Passaic County Satellite Office (973-513-9900) is conveniently located at 1237 Ringwood Avenue, Haskell.
The Passaic County Clerk’s Office offers Outreach Sites and provides scheduled dates and times throughout the year to come to the Borough of Pompton Lakes. During Outreach services, the County will process Passport Applications, issue Notary Oaths and Veteran’s Photo ID Cards.
The Passaic County Board of Election’s Division trains residents who are interested in serving as poll workers during the Primary, General, and Special Elections.
The Passaic County Health Department organizes outreach events and raises awareness of on-going and developing threats to public health. As part of the Health Department services, the Mosquito Control Division monitors and provides an Integrated Pest Management in an effort to control and reduce the mosquito population.
The Department of Senior Services, Disability and Veterans Affairs, manages and coordinates numerous services for the Aging/Disabled, Adult Day Care, Veterans Affairs, Para-Transit, Nutrition Services and Energy Assistance.
Senior activities include the Annual Art Show, the Children’s American Sign Language Workshop, and 2020 Senior Police Academy.

Garbage and Recycling Cheat Sheet

Recycling Center
The Borough Recycling Center is located on Grove Street and is open to all Borough Residents and Businesses. Residents and Businesses must display on their mirror or show the attendant a valid Borough decal or I.D. upon entering the Center. The Center is open Monday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.
The Recycling Center offers biodegradable lawn and leaf bags at a cost of $.35 cents per bag. The following materials are accepted at the Recycling Center:
- Grass Clippings
- Leaves, Brush & Tree Limbs (max length 8 ft; max diameter 2 inch)
- Co-mingled Glass, Plastic & Metal Recyclables
- Aluminum cans - must be separated from other co-mingled recyclables
- Paper & Cardboard Recyclables
- Corrugated Cardboard – must be separated from other paper recyclables
- Electronic Equipment & Computers
- Metals
- Waste Engine Oil
- Car Batteries
Tires may be brought to the Recycling Center at a cost of $2.50 per tire without the rim and $5.00 per tire with rim. Propane tanks are not accepted at the Recycling Center.
LEAVING MATERIALS AT THE RECYCLING CENTER GATE WHEN THE CENTER IS CLOSED IS CONSIDERED ILLEGAL DUMPING AND PUNISHABLE BY FINES AND/OR IMPRISONMENT.

Mr. Pereny is an accomplished writer, musician and educator for over the past 40 years. He has taught English at all levels from grammar school to college. Since the age of sixteen, he has written and performed his poems and songs all over the metro area. Over the years he has been published more than 200 times in anthologies, magazines and newspapers. His writings include two published books, several volumes of poetry, and other works. He was a founding editor of the literary/art magazine Lunch in 1975 and in 1977 Mr. Pereny founded Footwork which evolved into the Paterson Literary Review. Then in 1980 Mr. Pereny was editor of The Local Paper in Pompton Lakes.
The Pompton Poets is looking for new members to share their love of poetry. All are welcome to join and meet others, from first time poets to published writers and everything in between.

Seasonal Parking Reminder
|
The Borough of Pompton Lakes would like to remind residents that there is NO PARKING on snow covered roadways.
Until the storm has subsided and the roads are sufficiently plowed to allow for the safe passage of traffic.
DO NOT shovel or blow snow into roadways.
Non-compliance with the above will result in fines and/or towing of vehicles.
In addition, remove basketball hoops and stands that are in or near the roadway.

No Solicitation Registration
|
5-21.12 "No Solicitation" list and "No Solicitation" signs.
A. The Borough of Pompton Lakes shall institute a list of Borough residents who request that solicitors not solicit on their property. The "No Solicitation" list shall be maintained by the Municipal Clerk.
|
|
|
B. Residents of the Borough shall have their name and address added to the list by the Municipal Clerk upon receipt of a written request for such action. Such requests shall be maintained with the list.
C. Prior to any conduct of a solicitation covered by this section, the solicitor receiving a license or permit to solicit shall be provided with a copy of the "No Solicitation" list by the Municipal Clerk with the license or permit, and the licensee or permittee, their employees, agents, assistants or helpers shall thereafter refrain from any solicitation on the properties or to the names set forth on the list.
D. Borough residents and property owners may post "No Solicitation" signs on their property. In such event, no solicitor shall solicit or canvass on such properties.

Come meet your neighbors over a cup of coffee and snacks while giving your children the opportunity to play in a stress-free environment. This group is open to children of all ages.

Child Seats Aren’t Just For Babies!
- Motor vehicle crashes are the second-leading cause of death for children 4 to 10 years old. Many children of this age should be riding in booster seats which have been shown to reduce the risk of serious injury by 45 percent compared to seat belts alone.
- Booster seats protect children who are too big for a car seat but too small for a seat belt. Seat belts don’t fit children properly until they are at least 57” (4’9”) tall and weigh between 80 and 100 pounds. However, seatbelt fit varies in different vehicles as well as seating positions within the same vehicle. It is best to speak with a child passenger technician to assure your child is traveling safely.
- One in five parents whose children carpool say they “bend the rules” when driving, letting children ride without seat belts and without the car seat or booster seat they would normally use. And 61 percent of parents say they notice other carpool drivers bending the rules. Safe Kids research also shows that one in four parents report they don’t buckle up their children on every ride.

Community ShareCam Program
|
Community Share Cam is a community safety program instituted by the Pompton Lakes Police Department which allows both residents and businesses to partner with the PLPD in the fight against crime throughout the Borough. Simply by registering YOUR home or business surveillance system with the Pompton Lakes Police, YOU can be an invaluable asset in solving crimes in your neighborhood.

When a crime occurs in your neighborhood, the Pompton Lakes Police will call on YOU and request a copy of YOUR video footage. This footage will help establish leads, identify suspects and save valuable investigative time. All registered camera locations are stored in a secure database and are entered into our Records Management System allowing the PLPD to map out locations of cameras throughout the Borough. Community ShareCam DOES NOT provide the Pompton Lakes Police with direct access to YOUR surveillance system. Residents and businesses will only be contacted by the PLPD in the event of a crime occurring in the area of your camera coverage.

Keep an eye on hydrants
When winter is at its coldest, you may want to spend most of your time inside. However, it’s important to keep an eye on what’s happening outdoors, too. Wintry weather can create fire safety hazards, such as ice or heavy snowfall that can obstruct fire hydrants. You can help reduce the risk by keeping fire hydrants accessible and clear of ice and snow.

Why it matters
In an emergency, every second counts. Fire hydrants that are blocked, concealed, or difficult to access due to snow or ice impede emergency fire response.
Fire trucks carry a limited amount of water, so one of the first tasks upon arriving at a fire is to locate a water supply from the nearest hydrant. Hydrants covered in snow can be difficult to locate, and uncovering them can waste valuable time needed during the firefighting operations.
Keeping them clear can mean easier access to water and more time doing what really matters — fighting the fire.
How to keep fire hydrants clear
In addition to removing snow and debris covering the hydrant itself, the Pompton Lakes Fire Department recommends clearing a 3-foot area around the hydrant for easier access.
Who should clear hydrants
Although there are few hard and fast rules concerning who should clear hydrants, it’s generally considered the responsibility of the residents occupying property near a hydrant.
Consider helping elderly friends, neighbors, or those with medical conditions to keep their fire hydrants clear.
The winter can be a time for enjoying the great outdoors with friends and family. Help keep your home safe from winter fire hazards by ensuring your fire hydrants are clear and readily accessible in an emergency.
The Pompton Lakes Fire Department also suggests maintaining a shoveled path from the street, sidewalk or driveway to the fire hydrant so that it is visible from the road and firefighters can easily access it.
