ABI Board Approves 2019 Policies and Priorities
The ABI Board on Wednesday approved the 2019 policies. The policies and priorities for the association in 2019 will be focused on "Building on the Best." Highlights of the priorities include support of Future Ready Iowa, broadband, workforce housing and changes to the unemployment insurance system. The ABI public policy team will be working to get the materials to print and available for ABI members at the annual ABI Legislative Briefing and Reception on January 16, 2019.
Unemployment Tax Tables Unchanged for 2019
Iowa Workforce Development announced last week the unemployment tax rate table for eligible employers will remain the same going into 2019. Iowa is currently in Table 7 out of 8 possible tables, which means we are in the second most favorable position and will remain so for next year. Iowa law requires that IWD establish the tax table to determine the unemployment tax rate for eligible employers each year. A strong economy and low unemployment rates are significant indicators of what kind of tax table Iowa employers will be in. You can read the full press release

Federal Spotlight: Department of Labor Listening Sessions on Overtime Rule
In 2016, ABI commented to the U.S. Department of Labor in opposition to the proposed overtime rules. In 2017, a federal judge invalidated the rule. Now, the Department of Labor is holding listening sessions on a proposed revision to the regulations. As we know, wages vary across geographic regions and industries, and the initial rule was detrimental to Iowa businesses. There are no listening sessions scheduled in Iowa at this time. The Greater Des Moines Partnership and Bankers Trust will host an International Finance for Sales Practical Seminar on September 19, 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at 700 Locust St., Suite 100, in Des Moines.
