Older adults use online physician ratings, but view them cautiously

Ratings and reviews for nearly everything can be found online these days, including doctors. How are older adults using these ratings in their decisions about choosing doctors? In May 2019, the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging asked a national sample of adults age 50 ---80 about their use and perceptions of online doctor ratings.

Having a baby may cost some families $4,500 out-of-pocket, study finds

For some families, average out-of-pocket health care spending for maternity care ---- including the pregnancy, delivery, and three months postpartum ---- jumped from $3,069 in 2008 to $4,569 in 2015, according to findings published in the January issue of Health Affairs.

In a study published in the January issue of the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, Lindsay Admon, M.D., M.Sc. and a team of researchers found that severe morbidity and mortality at the time of birth is twice as high among indigenous women as it is among non-Hispanic white women.

Kao-Ping Chua, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of pediatrics, testified Wednesday before the Health Subcommittee of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee. Chua spoke about a provision that would remove a loophole in the nation's "orphan drug" law. The loophole has limited the availability of different forms of a key drug to treat opioid addiction, Chua said.
