The First Sunday of Advent
Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Gates
December 1, 2019

The German Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann, 1681-1767, was almost completely self-taught. His family intended that he should study law, but he chose a career in music instead. He held important positions in Leipzig and Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of that city's five main churches. While Telemann's career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, and his second accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving him.

Telemann was one of the most prolific composers and was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German musicians. He was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. Telemann's writings created the music which would define the German Lutheran choral tradition.

For the First Sunday of Advent, on December 1st the LOTI Church Choir and guest instrumental ensemble from the Lake String Quartet will perform one of Telemann's most popular compositions, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Gates. It is a cantata based on a portion of the text from Psalm 24. Who is this King of glory? It is the LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and let the King enter in. Among the copies of this cantata which have been handed down is a copy by J. S. Bach which bears testimony to the high respect he paid to his then more celebrated colleague from Hamburg: Bach performed the cantata himself in the Thomas Church in Leipzig in 1734.

Join us on Sunday, December 1st, the First Sunday of Advent with a festive collage of trumpet music from Torelli and Buxtehude, as well as the marching rhythms of our own Salvation Army band.

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Festival Service of Lessons and Carols
lessons and carols
In  December 1918, only weeks after the end of  World War I,  the war to end all wars , Eric Milner-White, the Dean of King's College, Cambridge, penned the worship service which is known as the Festival Service of Lessons Carols. Milner-White served as a chaplain in the British Army in the trenches of World War I, and knew the tragedies of war.  Having experienced the horrors, he wanted to comfort his fellow soldiers with a simple retelling of the prophecies of the Old Testament and the promise and hope of the Christmas gospel.

Harpist Andrea Stern, along with trumpeter Benjamin Alle and the LOTI Church Choir will lead the congregation in a Festival Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, December 8th.  This year's worship service will feature carols and melodies including A Carol from an Irish Cabin, Suo Gan A Welsh Lullaby and a Caribbean melody,  Da Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy.
The worship service will be followed by the annual Christmas Tea.
Visit of Saint Nicholas
December 8
St. Nicholas, the bishop of Myra in modern day Turkey, was an early priest in the Christian Church, he died around 342 AD. Legends that surround Nicholas tell of his love for God and neighbor, especially the poor. He became known as the symbol of anonymous gift giving.

St. Nicholas Day is traditionally celebrated on December 6th, so polish your shoes, or you may only receive coal this year.

Growlers & Theology
The informal study of  theology and adult beverages continues. Following the model of Luther in his home in Wittenberg, Germany, Pastor Haug leads a twice monthly gathering at the Parsonage
The next meeting is  Thursday, December 12th, at  7:00pm .
Children's Program & Santa Lucia
St. Lucia was a young Christian of Sicily who was martyred in 304 AD during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian. According to tradition, she had decided to devote her life to God and to give her possessions to the poor. In Sweden in the late 1700's, there were legends of a woman appearing in times of great famine distributing food to the starving. Perhaps because the name Lucia means light, and since her feast day fall on December, the week that marks the darkest days of the year, these stories were in turn attributed to the goodness and generosity of St. Lucia.

St. Lucia will make her lighted appearance as a part of the Sunday School Children's program at Lake of the Isles during worship on  Sunday, December 15th.   The Sunday School will present a retelling of the story of Jesus's birth from the book of Luke. The program will include readings, singing and bell ringing ~ and of course, they will wear costumes which makes for some memorable parent and grandparent photo opportunities.

December's Selection...

A groundbreaking book about Americans searching for faith and mutual respect, The Faith Club weaves the story of three women, their three religions, and their urgent quest to understand one another.
When an American Muslim woman befriends two other mothers, one Jewish and one Christian, they decide to educate their children about their respective religions. None of them guessed their regular meetings would provide life-changing answers and form bonds that would forever alter their struggles with prejudice, fear, and anger. Personal, powerful, and compelling, The Faith Club forces readers to face the tough questions about their own religions.
Pioneering, timely, deeply thoughtful, and full of hope, The Faith Club's caring message will resonate with people of all faiths.

Snacks and beverages are shared.
Contributions are welcome, but not required.

Christmas Eve at LOTI

We will offer two worship services at Lake of the Isles
on  Christmas Eve, December 24th, both with Holy Communion.

The Family Service at 4:30 pm will be designed for families with younger children. The service will feature a living nativity scene at the manger.

The  10:00 pm Candle Light Service of Holy Communion will celebrate the mystery of the Word made Flesh.
The LOTI Church Choir, together with guest musicians will perform a pastoral mass by German composer Karl Kempter, the 19th century organist in the cathedral in Augsburg, Germany. In parts of Germany and Poland, it was popular for church organists to compose a more lyrical, melodic Christmas liturgy for Christmas Eve which focused on the arrival of the shepherds. Kempter's simple style includes French horns to sound like shepherds in the nearby Alps. The service will close with the candle lit singing of Silent Night.
New Year's Eve Worship
The final worship service of the year will be held
on  Sunday, December 29th, at 9:30 am.   It will be an occasion to reflect on the old and look to the possibility of God's grace in the new year.

Louise Gillis is a classically trained painter of all mediums. For over twenty-five years, she has achieved notoriety as both a painter and instructor. Her knowledge of impressionist color theory sets the stage for portraiture, still life, interiors, landscape and murals in oil, watercolor, pencil and charcoal. This versatility allows Louise to focus on the needs of her subject matter and create the vibrancy and depth of each individual painting.

She is pleased to exhibit her paintings at beautiful Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church.
