Saturday School fall Festival
written by  Mrs. Christine Bedrossian

The Saint Sarkis Armenian Saturday School held its annual Autumn Harvest Festival this past Saturday, October 20th. The children enjoyed pizza and Lahmajun before the fun started. This year the kids were entertained by a DJ Jarrod who had them dancing while playing games and kept them engaged.  We had other activities that the kids were happy to participate in such as apple dipping, cupcake and pumpkin decorating.  Of course, the event would not have been complete without our general store which had delicious homemade apple and pumpkin pies, jams and Lemon scrubs prepared and donated by our wonderful members of the PTA and their families.  The children and their families posed for pictures at the beautifully decorated photo station for memories to last a lifetime.  Fun was had by all who attended and the event was a success.  Thank you to all who volunteered their time and donated to support our event.

"Enriching Your Marriage" Workshop at St. Sarkis Church - Session 2
Reported by Mrs. Lara Milian Bardizbanian

This Monday marked the 3rd week of the 5-part "Enriching Your Marriage" course at St. Sarkis. Fourteen families were greeted by a wine and cheese dinner graciously prepared and donated by by Vahe and Elsie Haladjian. Presented by Der Nareg, the session focused on compatibility, specifically how childhood and developmental trauma affects the dynamics of a relationship. The discussion focused and 4 adaptation styles: Connection, Attunement, Trust and Autonomy. These styles not only affect how a person feels but also impacts on how they present as adults. Der Nareg encouraged each couple to understand their own style and that of their spouse's. As mature adults, it's important to recognize an individual's personal adaptation style and explore how it affects the individual and the marital dynamic. Awareness is key in order to gain insight, especially when it comes to acknowledging feelings in a relationship. Der Nareg also touched on how these adaptation styles can affect family structure and parenting skills. Next week will focus on couple communication and patterns that either promote or sabotage sharing and problem-solving in a relationship.

Saint Sarkis Basketball News

The 2018-19 Armenian Churches Sports Association season started Sunday October 21 with our Girls and Junior Boys teams in action vs. Sts Vartanantz. At the end of the day both teams find themselves in 1 st place due to different kind of wins.

The Saint Sarkis Girls, defending champions, although they lost 6 veteran players, romped to a 42-22 win over a young and rebuilding Sts. Vartanantz team. The Junior Boys team, in its 2 nd season, won in a nail biting cliffhanger, preserving the narrowest of leads, 34-33.

The girls, led by the Shulman sisters and Tonya Orangian jumped to a quick 6-0 lead, and as the lead kept increasing, allowed the rest of the team to play a quick and aggressive game. New members of the team, Olivia Nercessian and Maria Kalliagas, naturally good athletes, played with increasing confidence, and veterans Nicole Issagholian and Alicia Mordjikian anchored a team that promises to contend for the championship honors.

The Junior Boys, in their 2 nd year, grew from 8 players to a squad of 15, due the popularity of their coach Arry Nalbandian and support of the parents. Parents and team kept meeting and practicing throughout the summer and results were noticeable. As coach Arry said to me before the game: YOU WILL BE SURPRISED.

The coach was right. The team took an early lead, and although the game was close till the end, our team lost the lead by 1 point only for a brief period.
Coaching, perseverance and terrific cheering from the stands paid off when the final whistle sealed this team's first win ever. Alex Kouyoudjian, Brandon Nalbandian and Noah Cubi were the high scorers with contributions from Matthew Varadi, Christian Voses and Shahen Feisel.

Everyone was very happy for the team and expressed confidence that there will be more exciting wins this season. The cheering for the team, already quite vocal from parents and friends, got a super boost from the presence of Miss Lori Terterian, who with several other young ladies, were very enthusiastic in their support of the team. It was a great thing to see, and hear, and we look forward to having them at other games in the future.

With both teams in 1 st place, it will be a season of hope and expectations, and we look forward to many more exciting and entertaining games.

A schedule of Saint Sarkis games will be posted on the bulletin board and we encourage all to come to the games for the "cheap thrills" and encourage our teams to victory.

LET'S GO ST. SARKIS.

Post game media comments: Coach and parents.
Arry Nalbantoglu - Head Coach
Last year we had a great year and we got destroyed every game but we always held our heads up and gave it our all!! I planned to have made sure that all my kids scored at least a point the whole last season which they did. This year all I wanted was 1 win for the season, the season started today and we won our first game. I'm so proud of all my boys which are 15 kids who are all eager to learn and play. I have already reached my goal but for now no more goals just let's enjoy this win and hopefully put a few more under our belts. Thank you to all the parents who are so involved with this team and helped us get this first win and all I want to say is I am blessed to be able to coach my 15 boys!!!

Madlen Hazarian Thanks to you and Jeff for your hard work with the kids! We couldn't have asked for better Coaches who inspire them to do better every time...first win ... more to come!

Hilda Sarkisian Gorgissian Thank you Arry and Jeff for your great dedication and believe in our kids and always pushing them to do their best! We are so Blessed to have such an amazing coaches. Thank you guys.

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS 1.18-24
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."
Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO MATTHEW 24.27-36
For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever there is a carcass, there the vultures will gather.
"Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other. Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
"No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
TWELVE HOLY TEACHERS OF THE CHURCH
On Saturday, October 27, the Armenian Church commemorates the Twelve Holy Teachers (Doctors) of the Church, namely: Hierotheus of Athens, Dionysius the Areopagite, Sylvester of Rome, Athanasius of Alexandria, Cyril of Jerusalem, Ephrem the Syrian, Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory the Theologian, Epiphanius of Cyprus, John Chrysostom, and Cyril of Alexandria.

FEAST OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE HOLY CROSS

This Sunday, October 28, the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Discovery of the Holy Cross (Giut Khatchi). Empress Helena, mother of Constantine and a devout Christian, wanted to visit the Holy Land and explore the sites Christ had walked centuries ago. She went to Golgotha (Calvary), which had become an obscure and neglected place. According to some chronicles, it was an informed Jew named Juda who pointed out the location. At her instruction, workers excavated the site and three wooden crosses were found. Which one was the True Cross? The three crosses were successively placed on the body of a youth who had just died. When one of the crosses was placed on him, the young man came back to life. This was determined to be the True Cross. The commemoration of this event takes place on the Sunday closest to October 26, and can vary from October 23 to 29.
The cross is a great source of pride for Armenians and they have created beautiful works of art using the cross. What once was a means of punishment and death became a symbol of salvation and victory.

"After the marvelous vision which the empress had, she began to search in Jerusalem for the precious wood of the cross on which the Messiah had been crucified. At her awesome command the Jews assembled and pointed out to her the precious wood of the cross which the Creator of creatures had ascended. The discovery of the holy cross in the holy place was accompanied by the spread of fragrance and the universe was filled with great gifts."
(From the Canon for the Discovery of the Holy Cross, according to the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church)
Also remembered this week:
St. Anastasius the Priest, Monday, October 30
Sts. Severianus of Sebastia, Hipparchus and his companions, Tuesday, October 31.
