A Special Message From Our Friends at the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic

In 2013, Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering created the Human Services Task Force, a group of over 250 volunteers ranging in age from 17-85. They assessed needs and inventoried local services available. A comprehensive human services plan was created and immediate outcomes led to creatively addressing various service issues, including access to affordable legal services, particularly for senior and immigrant populations.

Founded as the Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic by Mayor Nancy Rotering on May 1, 2015, the Clinic would serve as a community legal aid clinic serving residents of Highland Park and Highwood. Since the day the Clinic opened, it serves those in need of free legal services in the areas of immigration, domestic violence, and housing.

An uptick in requests for assistance necessitated immediate growth in geographic locations served, staff, volunteers, and space. In 2018, the Clinic relocated. Today, the Clinic continues to strategically meet the ever-changing needs of individuals and the greater community with expanded capacity, services offered, and geographic locations served – including the New Trier area.

The name was changed to the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic to better reflect the overall purpose of the organization. The Clinic continues to expand partnerships as well as provide educational opportunities. Services continue to be easily accessed and are provided by diverse and professional staff and volunteers who successfully advocate for legal solutions.

Having professional legal counsel to help navigate legal proceedings and policies can make a critical difference. Justice should be determined by more than one’s ability to pay or their socioeconomic status. Thanks to contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations, organizations, and law firms, the Clinic is able to help those in need of free legal services and expand to meet the needs of even more individuals and families.

There are always opportunities to volunteer and support the Clinic (even if you are not a lawyer). Please visit www.NSLegalAid.org , follow the Clinic on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, or contact the Clinic directly at [email protected] or 847 737 4042.
