Hit the Trail Challenge - Additional $10,000!

High Stakes Foundation has raised the bar to 30,000 miles, pledging an additional $10,000 in Challenge match funds! With one warm and sunny week left, log miles on the Whitefish Trail and help us reach this new goal!

"The community has logged 16,995 miles on the trail so far this May. With many participants waiting until the end of the month to log their miles, we're sure to see a big boost in miles at the end. A big thanks to the High Stakes Foundation for putting up another $10,000 in available match funds. It's great to see so many people getting active and healthy outside and on the Whitefish Trail. Whitefish Middle School students have logged over 1,500 miles on the trail this May! Three cheers Whitefish."

Heidi Van Everen, WLP Executive Director

Every mile logged on the Whitefish Trail this May will be matched by a $1 donated in support of our local trail and protected lands. It's not too late to log your miles! Send us your miles.

We sometimes have funny terms to describe near-perfect conditions while recreating outdoors. What's perfect snow called? Cold smoke. Ideal trail conditions? Hero dirt. This week, I heard a new phrase describing conditions on our local lands right now: welcome to the Green Room. Recent soaking rains have caused a flurry of growth in our local forests, and plants are bursting with stored energy. Deciduous leaves and larch needles seem to double in size overnight and grasses that are brown for most of the year are text-book green. Nature knows how to capitalize when conditions are ripe for growth.

Freshly graded road @ Lion Mountain
The Whitefish Trail continues to be in near-perfect condition right now. This week, tread work continues at Lion Mountain and volunteers are clearing the big tree at Lupfer. With good soil moisture, we recently graded the Lion Mountain access road to get rid of those pesky pot holes. Your donations make maintenance possible! Thank you. With sun and warm temperatures in the forecast this weekend, get out on the trail to log miles for our Hit the Trail Challenge. Every mile logged on the Whitefish Trail this month is matched by $1 donated in support of our local trail and protected lands! It's not too late to log your miles on the trail in May.

As a reminder, we ask that mountain bikers take care and caution while out riding on the Whitefish Trail, especially in Haskill. Bikers must yield to hikers, runners, and horseback riders. Sometimes it makes sense for a hiker to step aside to let a biker pass, but as a biker, never assume you have the right of way. Stop, say hi, and communicate a plan how to pass safely. The Whitefish Trail is a multi-use, multi-directional trail, and we appreciate your cooperation to help us keep the trail open for all types of non-motorized use.

As you get out to explore the Whitefish Trail this spring, we'd love to see your photos and hear your trail reports!

If you have been enjoying the Whitefish Trail recently,

Social Distancing on the Whitefish Trail

The Whitefish Trail is a non-motorized, multi-use trail system where hikers and bikers yield to horseback riders and bikers yield to both hikers and horseback riders.  As you approach other trail users, say hi to announce yourself, communicate a plan of who can step aside, and pass at least 6-feet wide. And please remember to drive with care when accessing our local trailheads.

Thank you to our Corporate Sponsors
