Conservation Notes
Taking Down an Exhibition

MOV’s award winning exhibition, Wild Things , closed to the public on January 12, 2020. The museum collections team is now working around the clock to ensure the objects and artefacts on display are properly taken down, while clearing out of the space to make room for the next scheduled exhibition. Fiona Hernandez, MOV Conservator, gives an overview of each step in the exhibition take down process from a conservator’s standpoint:

  1. Unmounting: The first step in the take down process for Wild Things involves removing many specimens from their exhibit mounts and placing them back into their storage supports. Collections staff are required to follow safe work procedures, wearing lab coats, breathing masks, and nitrile gloves, in order to protect from the heavy metal arsenic and mercury containing pesticides originally used in the taxidermy process.
  2. Condition Reporting: This next step involves referring to original condition reports for MOV and loan specimens and updating the document to reflect any changes that may have occurred to the artefact.
  3. Cleaning: This step involves vacuuming the objects to remove any dust that may have accrued while on display.
  4. Bagging: To protect handlers from heavy metal pesticides, and in preparation for freezing, the objects are bagged and sealed in clear plastic.
  5. Freezing: Organic objects and materials are frozen for a minimum 2-week period before returning to storage, as part of pest management and quarantine procedures in the museum.
  6. Crating and Shipping/Registry: If the object is a loan it will then be crated and sent back. If it is an artefact belonging to the museum, it will be sent to registry after the freezing process where the object will be properly stored and catalogued.
