Series:   "Belonging"

Sermon :   "The 'In-Cast' (Then and Now) "

Scripture :  Matthew 25:31-46

This Sunday
For me it began with elementary school kickball.  You know how it works, the captain is chosen and then he (or she) begins to choose their team; one and then the other.  It always begins with the most gifted athletes and then each works their way "down" to the smaller, or more uncoordinated or weaker players.  "Okay, fine, I'll take Beeman," are words I remember well, usually followed by the rolling of eyes and an exasperated sigh.   I always envied those who were chosen first.  I always thought of myself as so much less than them.  It continued through junior high and even the beginning of high school.  The first chosen were always, it seemed, a part of the "in" crowd.  I was just that kind of geeky kid who could sing - but who really cares about singers in middle school?

The elements of that kind of judgment carry on into our adult lives.  We realize that some continue to be "in" with others identified as "not so in, or even out."   This Sunday we'll explore that.  Throughout the news stories today, it seems as though we live in a dichotomist world; a world of "either / or," "in or out."  It seems as though it is all around us; and to some extent, the attitude is often within us, sometimes in overwhelming ways.  And I'm not just talking about those we see as "in or out."  What I think may be the bigger issue is do we feel comfortable with where we see ourselves?  Jesus turned it all on its ear.  We see that in the scripture for this Sunday. We may be surprised to find out who some of the "in" crowd was. Maybe it will help us with our understanding of ourselves, and even in our role in the world today.  To prepare please read Matthew 25:31-46.

MINISTRY NEWS
All Saints Sunday
Submit Names by October 28
On Sunday, November 4 at both services we will remember and honor all the people we have loved and released to God through death in the hope of new life. We invite you who have lost loved ones since last All Saints' Sunday (November 5, 2017) to fill out the Sunday attendance form now with your loved one's name and relationship to you. These names will be spoken, a candle lit for each one, we will give thanks for them, and pray for us all as we continue to work through our grief and seek renewed confidence and peace in the promises of Christ Jesus. The deadline to submit names is Sunday, October 28 .

CRC Panel Discussion
Saturday, November 3, 2018 - 2:00 - 4:00pm
This is an opportunity for members of our congregation to listen to, and ask questions of, Methodists who are in churches that have gone through the process of deciding whether or not they want to become a Reconciling Congregation.

There will be panel members from churches that recently became reconciling, churches that have been reconciling for a long time, and churches that went through the process and decided not to become reconciling.

Church members can submit questions they would like asked of the panel ahead of time to a question box, bring questions with them to ask the panel members directly, or just come to listen.
Finance Report
  •  At the end of the first quarter of the fiscal year on September 30, our income exceeded our expenses by about $1600, or 4%. This is good news, but it is tempered a bit by the fact that in the summer months we have a reduced program and thus, fewer expenses. If you have questions about the church finances contact Jim Phillips.
  • First quarter statements were mailed out earlier this week to those who contributed between July 1 - September 30, 2018.  If you have any questions about your statement please contact Wendi in the church office.

Cluster Conference
November 4
There will be a Cluster Conference on Sunday, November 4 starting at 7:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Bellevue. Presided over by our District Superintendent, Rev. Rich Lang, this is a communal event with other Methodist churches in our area to gather the laity  to have civil, open, serious conversation about the mission of the UMC. Everyone is invited to attend.  Using a Table Talk format, there will be three movements to this Cluster Conference.
a.)     Setting the table with a teaching about stages of faith.
b.)    Opening the table with a Bible study about the content of Jesus' teachings.
c.)   The main course being conversation about The Way Forward and the future of our District (mission field).
The Way Forward Information
Have you heard about a special General Conference in February and been unsure what it meant?  Do you know what the bishops are recommending for how the structure of the United Methodist Church may change as a result of the General Conference?  Are you curious what it will mean for Aldersgate? On Monday October 22 at 7:00pm members of the CRC committee presented information from the conference and the UM news service and distilled it into a few handouts and slides. Many spent the evening listening, responding, and questioning together. We ended the evening with a short prayer time for the church and the denomination and our siblings and family members in Christ throughout the world. Here is a link to the slides we used  on Monday for you to read. We are open to your questions!  Contact is Joe Lee, chair of the Core Leadership Team.
Rummage Sale Update
A huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped with the RUMMAGE SALE! Thank you to those who set up and took down tables and signs, those who donated and bought items, those who organized, priced, cashiered, sold, packed and hauled.  The team work made it happen and your contributions of time and energy were greatly appreciated.   All together we made a grand total of $2,350 for the mission travel fund and the youth retreats.  And we were able to find "good homes" for our extra items at: The Baby Corner, The Friends of the Library, Sophia Way, Mary's Place, The Men's Homeless Shelter, and Goodwill. A special thanks to the wrestling team at Newport High School who hauled away leftovers to Goodwill to support their fundraiser.   If you donated items to the rummage sale, click here   for a donation letter for your tax records.

We also need to borrow muffin pans and electric oven roasters. CHURCH & SOCIETY
Warm Socks Needed
School has started and rains have returned!  The need for warm socks touches everyone, especially the homeless.  Please leave new socks in the basket across from the office.  They will be delivered to Congregations for the Homeless, Griffin House, Mary's Place, Operation Nightwatch and Sophia Way.   Griffin House may be new to many in our congregation.  Located in Renton, Griffin House serves homeless boys.  Imagine what a pair of socks in Seahawks colors would mean to its new owner!
