Niagara College has opened Canada's first Teaching Distillery at their Niagara-on-the-Lake campus, and the first batch of students have begun the Artisan Distilling Graduate Certificate Program.

David Dickson, a distiller at Niagara College, shared some insight with us on how the roots of the beverage distillation industry are inexorably tied to farmers and the agricultural industry. Read more on our blog.

The Greenbelt Foundation is launching a series of articles exploring how climate change is impacting the region and the people who live here, and how residents can take action.

For the first article in the series, the Greenbelt Foundation partnered with the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington to explore how climate change impacts gardening and plants. Learn more.

As part of the City of Hamilton's inaugural  Food Literacy Month , the Public Health CDP RDs and the  Hamilton Food Advisory Committee  are hosting a community screening of the documentary  Before the Plate  on Friday, October 26, at 7 p.m. at  The Zoetic  (526 Concession Street, Hamilton ON).

Have you checked out the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) resource for Specialty Crop Growers?

"OMAFRA field staff receive enquiries on a diversity of specialty crops each day," says Evan Elford, New Crop Development Specialist with OMAFRA. "We created this specialty crop resource to assist growers in their preliminary search for information, making it as regionally specific and farm applicable as possible."


As you may know, the Local Food and Farm Co-ops is launching the  Fair Finance Fund this year to  provide loans to local food and farm enterprises.

The Fund is raising capital through the issuance of community bonds, and has launched a  retail investor survey  to gauge interest on this investment opportunity. Read more.

The Greenbelt Fund is partnering with the Wallace Centre and Farm Credit East to undertake a Food Hub Financial Benchmarking Survey to help us all better understand where the food hub sector is headed, and help individual hub operators understand how to get on, and stay on, the path to long-term financial success.
