Greetings, Saxon Families!
As we enter the holiday season, I’m reminded of how stressful this time of year can be. In addition to travel, visits with family and friends, parties and religious celebrations, our students continue to focus on their studies. Further, seniors face a monumental time in their academic careers as they submit college applications and wait for admission decisions.
During this time, I ask that we work together to
help our students find balance between their academic load, time spent with family and friends and needed downtime. During the Thanksgiving and winter breaks, encourage your children to embrace their time out of school and have fun!
As we look forward,
life balance could be a New Year’s resolution for all of us. Our fast-paced world makes it difficult for balance to occur naturally in our lives and, personally, I know I sometimes wrestle with how to take care of all of life’s demands.
I sincerely
thank you for entrusting Langley with your children. Langley's faculty, staff and I are committed to providing them with the best possible education, while also helping them to mature into phenomenal men and women prepared to make positive contributions to society and our community. Go Saxons!

Cafeteria. Encourage your student to come earn an hour of service!
This month we spotlight
Cards for Kids. In this service, students write and decorate notes of encouragement, which are
sent to patients in hospital pediatric departments. The bright and colorful notes encourage these young patients to stay positive and keep on healing.
This activity was introduced to Saxon Service
by
Ms. Chern, a Langley English teacher, following prolonged hospitalizations of her granddaughter. Ms. Chern saw first-hand the meaningful impact these fun cards have on children during their hospital stays.
Cards by Langley students have been delivered to children in several hospitals in the area, including
INOVA Fairfax and
Georgetown Med Star Hospital.

Results are in for the Langley Reflections art contest, and this year the judges were confounded by many amazing pieces. Twenty-nine entries competed across five categories (film, literature, music composition, photography, visual arts). The
first place entries will move on to the Northern Virginia district competition.

Congratulations to our LHS website curators, who won
Best Use of Calendars and Events in this year’s
FCPS Best of the Web awards. Each year, FCPS honors school websites for excellence in design and use of web-based tools.

Nancy Ayoub work together to comprehensively populate the website calendar well in advance of events.
They use taxonomy that enables events to be filtered by categories such as athletics, clubs, PTSA, student services and performing arts. A one-page printable daily rotation schedule also can be printed.

Last week, Langley clinic aide
Mariama Kalokoh, several FCPS nurses and about 20 volunteers spent two days screening sophomores and new students for vision and hearing problems.
Many thanks to
Leslie Speidel for coordinating this large volunteer effort and to the volunteers, who gave several hours of their time to help provide this important annual service to our students.

he 2018-19 FCPS Youth Survey results are in and here are some results: cigarette smoking is declining but
vaping is a concern
, as it is common in FCPS. While only 2 percent of students reported smoking cigarettes,
20 percent of all respondents reported vaping within the last 30 days.
Twenty-five percent of seniors vape nicotine, 15 percent vape marijuana and 12 percent vape "only flavoring." This group of students should know that they may not be vaping only flavoring — the label may say "no nicotine" but the labels aren't accurate!
