First Day of School - August 29
The first day of school is right around the corner and we are eager to welcome our students back to another successful school year! Classes begin on Wednesday, August 29 for the 2018-2019 school year at all PreK-12 schools in the Garden Grove Unified School District.

For kindergarten through twelfth grade students, this will be a full day of instruction (no late start or early dismissal). All state preschool students are on a shortened schedule and accompanied by a parent to their first day of school.

An Inspirational Start to the Year
Last Friday, GGUSD staff came together for our annual Superintendent's Keynote event in preparation for the 2018-2019 school year. It was a festive occasion with our cheerful Garden Grove High School ASB greeters, a surprise performance from the impressive drumline from Bolsa Grande High School, a GGUSD sing-along led by the talented Los Amigos vocal ensemble, and uplifting cheers from Santiago High School cheerleaders. Thanks to our students for helping us start the year off right! We can't wait to see you soon!  #GGUSDPride
Air-Conditioning Update
Over the summer, seven GGUSD elementary schools, including Bryant, Garden Park, Parkview, Simmons, Violette, Warren, and Woodbury, received brand new air-conditioning. By 2020, all GGUSD schools will be fully air-conditioned. We are pleased to offer our students a comfortable learning environment! Thanks to the Board of Education for their investment in a/c as well as the community support for Measure P which has made it all possible!

A Makeover at Eisenhower
The walkway to the garden at Eisenhower Elementary School received a major upgrade this summer. Kudos to Mr. Keeney and Mr. Nelson for your hours of hard work painting a beautiful mural for students to enjoy. It looks great!  #GGUSDPride

Hands-On Mentoring

Last week, Dr. Mafi hosted an afternoon workshop for the students from Santiago High School that she has been mentoring since they were in elementary school. Students participated in a variety of interactive activities about motivation, grit, and study skills and also spent time prepping for their academic work. This was a great refresher prior to the first day of school on August 29.
Registration Day
Bell Intermediate School was bustling with excitement on Aug 22 as students and parents attended the school's Registration Day, one week before the first day of school. Students received their school schedule and chatted about the elective courses they were excited to take. Bell's mascot, the Roadrunner, greeted guests with high-fives and the PTSA was busy selling t-shirts! #GGUSDPride
Teambuilding at Doig

Doig Intermediate School finished its AVID summer bridge this week with a team building activity of Rock Paper Scissors with 105 students! It was a spirited game and students got fully engaged learning about what it means to be a Doig scholar!
Safe Schools

The Garden Grove Police Department created this graphic to remind the community of the rules of the road. We're grateful that our area police departments encourage drivers to take extra precaution in school zones and to follow the rules when driving near a school bus. We join with our police in asking the community to exercise extreme safety on August 29th to provide our 43,000+ students and 5,000+ employees with a safe first day of school!
