Bishop's Book for Fall 2018

Bishop Barry Beisner has selected "The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World" as this fall's Bishop's Book. Join us in reading about this conversation on joy by two remarkable spiritual leaders.

From authors Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai Lama:  "We hope this small book will be an invitation to more joy and more happiness...We are sharing what two friends, from very different worlds, have witnessed and learned in our long lives. We hope you will discover whether what is included here is true by applying it in your own life."

Buy the book here. A discussion guide for book groups is forthcoming.

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE BISHOP
Camp Noel Porter Celebration - Sept. 1

For decades, Camp Noel Porter has been a sacred place for families, young adults, youth, and children. As camping programs have changed, the Camp Noel Porter board and the Board of Trustees have prayerfully decided that it is no longer possible to hold camp programs on this site. It is time to say goodbye to this summer camp ministry, remembering the spirit-filled gifts that we have received here. The time has come to "pass it on" as our camp song reminds us.

We will be honoring this beloved ministry on Saturday, Sept. 1. Below is an agenda of the day: (f or questions, please email  [email protected] )

2:00 p.m.    Visit the camp, arts/crafts, ping-pong, etc.
4:00 p.m.    Eucharist at the Outdoor Chapel
5:00 p.m.    Dinner provided
6:00 p.m.    Campfire
7:30 p.m.    Closing prayer and closing song, "Pass It On"

Camp Noel Porter attire is welcome!

What about the Noel Porter property?
While both boards have reached consensus approving a possible property sale, there is no sale in process at this time. Any sale of the property would need to account for the care of the chapel and answer the concerns about St. Nicholas church.

Pre-Convention Gathering to Focus on Baptismal Ministry

Our third Pre-Convention Gathering topic is " Following God's Call: From Church Chores to Ministry."  How can our church communities cultivate and support ongoing vocational discernment for brand new and long-time leaders? How can we cultivate spiritual practices that sustain each person's baptismal ministry inside and outside the walls of our churches?

Join us for a morning of learning, discussion, and discernment about these questions.  The event is free, and lunch will be provided.  Learn more here.

LEVN is moving to Sacramento, and they need your help! This is an incredible undertaking that fulfills the vision of Jocelynn Hughes, the outgoing Pastor and Executive Director of LEVN. Her faith in the future of LEVN brought us to this point, and now we need to come together in community to bring the program officially over the causeway and furnish the homes of LEVN volunteers for the 2018 - 2019 program year.

Sustainable Development Goals grants are available

At the 2016 Diocesan Convention we passed a resolution, following the lead of the United Nations and the Episcopal Church, that extends the commitment of using 0.7% of our budget for overseas development. The focus is on efforts to help people and or communities develop ways to become self sustaining. Among the 17 stated goals are those including comprehensive education, better farming techniques, relief of hunger and economic growth.

So far this year, your commission has responded to the emergency request from the American Friends of the Diocese of Jerusalem for help for the Al Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza. The hospital was overwhelmed during the border skirmishes with Israel with injured of all ages and walks of life while access to equipment and supplies was curtailed. We have sent $1,000 out of this year's funds to support the life saving efforts of this hospital.

The remainder of our funds are available for projects that support one or more of the above goals for the development of locally sustainable projects. We are inviting our congregations to consider applying  for grants supporting projects or programs overseas that meet one or more of these goals. We are particularly interested in ways partnerships and projects are being developed in cooperation with and supporting local efforts.

Download the  grant application ; the deadline to apply is Sept. 20.

The committee, (Lucretia Jevne, Jane Snibbe, Dan Boeger, Elizabeth Potts) looks forward to hearing about your ideas for developing sustainable projects.
Piano available from St. Francis, Fair Oaks

As you may recall earlier this year, the folks at St. Francis offered up many of their precious items to the rest of the churches around our diocese. This was a very successful and smooth process, and "we thank the wonderful folk at St. Francis, Fair Oaks, for their work on this," said Lynn Zender of St. Martin's, Davis, who shepherded the dispersal.

There is  still one item available -- the  Aldrich Upright Mahogany Piano -- in good condition, S/N 72910.  The measurements of this piano are:  38" high, 24" deep, 56 3/4" wide. It has a good tone but would need tuning after the move.

Please email [email protected] if you are interested, or if you have questions. Also, please take into consideration that you would need to go to Fair Oaks and pick up the piano and arrange for its transportation to your congregation, at a time and date to be arranged.
