Game Combats Fake News
Forbes magazine featured an article about a new Facebook game, The News Hero, designed by Latvia-based NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence. Players are in charge of a publishing company and have to choose which stories are real and which not, before authorizing publication.

" I'm really energized by questions about how we can help our students develop the intellectual and practical skills to be media literate consumers and producers, whether they are aiming to work as journalists or as advocacy professionals. What can we learn from the history of media and communication that informs our understanding of the present? What role do media and communication technology play in creating the conditions for contemporary social movements related to issues like racial justice and LGBT rights? As an example of how we put this into practice, in April of 2018 I worked with several of our graduate students to organize the Advocacy/Journalism Conference, using a mix of panel discussions and hands-on workshops to explore just these kinds of questions. Project Look Sharp is offering a six week online course designed for educators who are looking for strategies for teaching critical thinking and addressing bias using the tools of media literacy. CFP: 2019 ICA Conference
The International Communication Association is now accepting papers for the 2019 Conference to be held in Washington, D.C. from May 24-28, 2019. The conference theme, Communication Beyond Boundaries, encourages papers which showcase an understanding of the role of communication and media at the intersection of social, political, and cultural boundaries, and research that intersects domains both within and outside of academia.

Facebook's new Digital Literacy Library features a collection of lessons which include group discussions, activities, quizzes, and games designed to help young people develop skills needed to navigate the digital world, critically consume information, and responsibly produce and share content. Created by experts in consultation with teens, some of the topics covered include security, privacy, safety, information literacy, positive behavior, and content production.  [ learn more ]

Doc Academy
Doc Academy provides free, 
easy-to-use resources for secondary school teachers who want to use documentary films to engage students in thinking about the world, society, and their place in both. Educators can teach a variety of subjects including English Language Arts, Social Studies, History, Film Studies, STEM, and more using the included short clips from documentary films and standards-aligned lesson plans for high school classrooms.  [ learn more ]
 
Media Literacy Quick 
Reference Guide
NAMLE has created a one-page, quick reference guide which defines media literacy and provides a set of questions which media consumers can use to deconstruct the media messages they encounter in all forms of media. 

Podcast Series: Planet of Propaganda
Media Education Lab at the University 
of Rhode Island has released Planet of Propaganda, a podcast series which looks at the efforts of different educators across Europe who are teaching about propaganda through the lens of media literacy. The series includes an introductory podcast and five additional podcasts which cover media literacy initiatives in Belgium, Croatia, Romania, Poland and Finland. [ learn more]
 
Digital Tool: Memories of September 11, 2001
This free, online digital tool created 
by Kara Clayton and Carolyn Fortuna at the Media Education Lab is designed to help high school and college students understand the importance of sharing memories as a form of oral history. The tool includes a three-part lesson plan which includes learning about the events of September 11, analyzing newspapers and videos related to the coverage of September 11, and then participating in an asynchronous conversation with someone who personally experienced September 11. Through these lessons, students learn digital literacy and research skills while improving their social and emotional learning skills.  [learn more]
 
Publication: Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change
This summer, the 12th Salzburg 
Academy on Media and Global Change gathered 76 students, along with faculty and visiting experts from over 30 countries around the world to re-imagine journalism. The program focused on the exploration of models and approaches to storytelling that combat an emerging culture of distrust. The final publication, titled Persist: New Ideas for Journalism in an Age of Distrust, features six chapters that educate, inspire, and advance new pathways for media and news institutions, journalists, and storytellers.
