* Understand how sleep works and the ways in which food, light, and other activities act to help or hurt the process
* Think outside the box to better understand ways to treat a multitude of
conditions-from insomnia to sleep apnea to restless leg syndrome and circadian sleep disorders
* Wade through the ever-changing sea of sleep technology and understand its value as it relates to your own sleep struggles.

"I so appreciate de Marneffe's thoughtful and compassionate book. She makes complex psychological theories about attachment and projection come alive with clear and concise prose. The book is fundamentally hopeful about couples' capacity to grow and evolve, and become more intimate, through the rough patch. But she doesn't offer pat solutions that are simplistic or formulaic. Nor does she judge couples that are, for a variety of reasons, not able to weather the rough patch."

Welcome to a new semester!

We hope you had a tranquil and enjoyable summer. Hopefully, you were able to take some much needed time to nurture your well-being after an active workload last year.

As we embark on this new semester, we suggest setting some intentions for taking breaks and mindful moments in order to ease your stress as work projects accumulate. A simple breathing exercise or short walk outdoors can promptly rejuvenate your energy and mindset.

Employee Assistance is here to support you with your stress management, and can provide guidance to you and your dependents through short-term counseling, assessment, referrals, and workshops. Please call 510-643-7754 to set up an in-person or phone appointment.

Sincerely,

Employee Assistance Fall 2018 Workshops

Wednesday, September 26th; 12:10-1:30 pm
Speaker: Eve Fine, Golden Bear Sleep and Mood Research Clinic

The importance of sleep is, perhaps, a given. Sleep is critical not only to our physical health, but also to our ability to solve problems, make decisions, and regulate our emotions. Yet for many of us, knowing how important sleep is simply increases our worries that we're not getting enough. And, frustratingly, these worries can keep us up at night! Drawing from sleep science, this workshop will explore ways to develop healthy habits in the evening, in the morning, and during the day in order to improve sleep. The workshop will also address sleep-related worries and offer suggestions to help worriers "rest easy."

Wednesday, October 3rd; 2 - 3 pm
Panelist: Leslie Bell, Ph.D. LCSW, CEAP

Insights for Your Retirement Transition: Panelists will provide insight into opportunities to consider in the transition of retirement, including practical tools that can help.

Thursday, November 8th; 12:10-1:30 pm
Speaker: Genee Jackson, Ph.D. CEAP Employee Assistance

The quality of our relationships can influence our personal and professional success.  Our ability to effectively manage relationships both at home and at work is a determining factor in our overall health and happiness.  This research-based class explains why, and offers information on how to maintain healthy bonds in all areas of your life.
Wednesday, December 6th; 12:10-1:30 pm
Speaker: Nicole Sudduth, LCSW, Employee Assistance

During the holidays, we are more likely to be stressed out and overwhelmed by obligations, errands and high expectations. Our "to-do" lists increasingly grow, leading us to race through each day in an effort to complete holiday shopping and errands. And while family time for some of us is joyous, for others of us it can bring added stress and feelings of disappointment and anger. This workshop will explore triggers that can lead to the "holiday blues," look at ways to increase mindfulness by bringing you back to the present moment, and give practical stress management tips that may help reduce stress levels and allow you to enjoy the holidays more thoroughly.
