Harvey Heroes Mural Unveiled Along District Trail

From Dark Days to Bluer Skies: Westchase District unveiled its latest public art installation along the Brays Bayou Connector Trail (aerial image courtesy of Mark Mulligan, Houston Chronicle).

Last week, Westchase District unveiled the latest entry to its public art collection: a 20 x 100-foot mural commemorating the first responders and civilian rescuers who reacted bravely in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Representatives from the City of Houston, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Harris County, the Houston Fire Department, the Houston Police Department and the Louisiana Cajun Navy were on hand to watch as workers pulled back a tarp revealing mural artist Larry Crawford's largest work to date. Thanks to all who attended the event.

Even pictures don't do justice to the size and scale of this piece, so you should definitely check it out in person. The mural is located  along the banks of a Harris County Flood Control District channel, immediately adjacent to our Westchase District trail system at the confluence of the Brays Bayou Connector Trail and Wilcrest Connector Trail.

Flood Control Bond Proposal Voting Saturday, Aug. 25

Harris County Commissioners Court has called a bond election for August 25, 2018 - the one-year anniversary of when Hurricane Harvey made landfall in Texas - for the Harris County Flood Control District.

Registered voters in Harris County will be asked to vote on what could be $2.5 billion in bonds for flood risk reduction projects throughout the county. Last fall, the Greater Houston Partnership set up a task force to determine what the region needed to do to protect itself against another flood disaster like Harvey. The group identified $54 billion worth of projects needed for flood resiliency in the Greater Houston region.

The bond would pay for projects ranging from construction of storm water detention basins to voluntary home buyouts. It would also include repairs to infrastructure damaged by Harvey. If the bond passes, homeowners will see their property tax bills go up by roughly 3 cents per $100 of assessed value. All registered voters are encouraged to participate.

District Takes Stock of Street Conditions on Westheimer

Our projects department recently hit the streets of Westchase District with members of landscape architecture firm Design Workshop assessing sidewalk conditions in anticipation of the District's Westheimer streetscape improvements.

As part of the District's 380 Area Agreement with the City of Houston, Westchase District will reconstruct six miles of sidewalks along Westheimer from Kirkwood to Westerland. The project will include pedestrian enhancements such as custom bus shelters, landscaping, improved lighting, wayfinding signage, and new crosswalks and traffic signal mastarms. Construction is expected to begin in late 2019.

Area Students Benefit from WDCF Summer Supply Drive

Westchase District businesses contributed generously this summer to the school supply drive hosted by the Westchase District Community Fund

More than four carloads of donated school supplies were delivered to Sneed Elementary, Paul Revere Middle School and West Houston Assistance Ministries.

One highlight from the drive: Kongsberg Oil & Gas, 10777 Westheimer, donated a smart board to Paul Revere (teacher Johnny Davis, pictured left, accepted the board from Kongsberg's Jorge Barbero, right). Thanks to all who participated in the drive.

HPD Educates District Businesses on Human Trafficking

HPD's Sgt. John Wall shared with District stakeholders how to spot signs of human trafficking.
Don McKinney, Westchase District's vice president of public safety, recently hosted a public safety alliance lunch and learn with District stakeholders. The meetings are a regular service the District provides to educate area businesses on various public safety topics.

Sgt. John Wall with the Houston Police Department's vice division and human trafficking unit, shared with managers of apartments, hotels and offices in the District about how they can spot signs of human trafficking.

According to recent statistics, more than 300,000 people in Texas are victims of human trafficking, including 80,000 underage boys and girls forced into prostitution. Wall urged people to call HPD's vice division at 713-308-8600 if they suspect human trafficking may be taking place.
