Good morning,

As you may be aware, the Marquette City Commission has been working on a draft ordinance regarding recreational marijuana establishments within the City of Marquette. At their September 9 meeting, a motion was passed to put no limitations on the number of facilities. Upcoming meetings will focus on addressing buffer zones, or areas where marijuana activity may not be allowed because of potential conflict, such as schools, churches, daycare centers, public parks, and State licensed substance use disorder programs. A 500 ft. distance requirement is being considered. The City Commission will address this issue at their September 30 meeting, where public comment will be allowed; however, the actual Public Hearing and vote to consider passage will take place at the October 15 meeting. City Commission meetings are held in Commission Chambers at Marquette City Hall, 300 West Baraga Avenue, beginning at 6:00 p.m. if you are interested in attending either of these meetings. At this time, the MDDA Board of Directors has not taken a position, based on lack of information, precedent, or input from the downtown community. We welcome your feedback to help guide our discussions on this issue.

The second stage of this process involves amending the City's Land Development Code to provide for zoning standards for marijuana establishments. This stage will be worked on in coming months and will include Planning Commission work sessions which will allow for additional public interaction and input. I will keep you apprised of these opportunities as they become available.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Salmon
