YC Christmas Cash!
The YC Christmas Cash calendars are being sold for $25 each through November 1. Each calendar purchased will have a four-digit number and will enter the buyer in a daily drawing for the month of December.  Each day of December has a different payout assigned.  When we pull a purchaser's calendar number on a specific date in December, they will win the amount noted on that date (we are not using PA Lottery numbers).  Every purchaser has 31 chances to win, coordinating with the 31 days of the month.  Winners will be posted on the YC website,  www.yorkcatholic.org , and will be notified by email.  The winner does not need to be present to win.  Winning raffle amounts will be mailed weekly.

Return order forms and money to the YC Christmas Cash calendar homeroom representative in a sealed envelope marked with student name(s) and homeroom(s) beginning October 23.  Please make sure the order forms are legible and filled out completely. Extra forms are available on the YC website homepage in the Announcements section.

Numbered calendars labeled with the purchaser's name will be sent home for distribution via the oldest student in the selling family after  November 4 .  Parents will be notified via email when calendars are being sent home.

Special Purpose Entity
Get a Tax Break

We have exciting news to share with you regarding Special Purpose Entities (SPE).  Pennsylvania now allows individuals to take advantage of EITC Tax Credits (just as businesses can) whereby you have the opportunity to re-direct 90% of your personal state income taxes to York Catholic High School.

SPE is based on tax liability, not income, therefore each taxpayer's situation will differ. Participants must be PA residents where at least one spouse is employed or has an ownership interest in a PA for-profit business. An individual or couple filing jointly must have a state tax liability of $3,500 or more to participate. To see if you qualify for 2019, you can find your PA tax liability on Form PA-40 Line 12 of your most recent tax return. 100% of participant contributions are distributed to the school. You have to pay these taxes regardless, so why not have a say in how your taxes are allocated? Additionally, you will receive at least a 10% personal deduction on your federal taxes. The money you re-direct to York Catholic is for educational purposes, specifically tuition assistance.

If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please follow these steps:
The last day to apply for 2019 is December 1.  Applications for 2020 will be available after the first of the year.

For more information about this easy tax donation, please contact Katie Seufert, York Catholic Principal, at [email protected].

Vaping Alert
Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine announced that the Pennsylvania Department of Health has confirmed one death and multiple cases attributed to lung injuries associated with vaping in Pennsylvania and recommends that people do not vape.

"The lung injury cases are very serious, life-threatening and even fatal," Dr. Levine said. "We do not yet know what is making people sick, and whether the illnesses are related to products being used, or potentially the delivery of those products. I strongly urge everyone who is vaping illegally bought products, in particular those with THC, to stop. In addition, there could be possible risks with legally purchased products. We want to warn people that investigations are ongoing and we advise they use extreme caution before using any vaping product at this time."

Pennsylvania has reported nine confirmed and 12 probable cases of the lung illness to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and are investigating an additional 63 cases. Each of the individuals involved in the cases have suffered serious lung injuries and most have been hospitalized.

"Many medications carry risk and vaping medical marijuana products sold in our dispensaries carries risk in the same way that other medications do," Dr. Levine said. "If you are vaping, whether as part of the medical marijuana program or not, it is essential that you have an honest conversation with your physician about the potential risk for serious illness. For those who are part of the medical marijuana program and have concerns, we encourage you to talk to  your physician or the pharmacist at the dispensary to

Signs and symptoms of a potential lung injury associated with vaping include:
  • Cough;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Chest pain;
  • Nausea or vomiting;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Fatigue;
  • Fever; or
  • Weight loss.
Please see your health care provider if you or a loved one are showing signs or symptoms.
The department is continuing to work with the Poison Control Centers in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration as part of this widespread investigation.

Generally, e-cigarettes are not safe for youth, young adults, pregnant women or adults who do not currently use tobacco products. It is also important to remember that e-cigarette aerosol is not harmless "water vapor." It can contain harmful substances, including nicotine and ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs; flavoring such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to a serious lung disease; volatile organic compounds; cancer-causing chemicals and heavy metals such as nickel, tin and lead.

Additional information on e-cigarettes, the dangers of vaping, and how to quit smoking can be found on the Department of Health's website at  health.pa.gov.
