A Word from our Principal

Whitesburg families,
We are excited to begin a new school year! Our teachers, custodians, and PTA have been working hard to get things ready for the return of students on August 6. The building looks fantastic!
I hope your family is able to join us for the Teacher Meet & Greets and supply drop off tomorrow, Thursday, August 2.
Once again, welcome back!
Sincerely,
Bradley A. Scott, Ed.D

Support our students and teachers today!

The PTA plays an important role at Whitesburg. The mission of PTA is " to make every child's potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children".
Our PTA is able to honor that mission through contributions by our school families.
Many of us already contribute our time, whether we're able be a class parent, head a committee, or sign up to help at an event.
We also need the gift of a financial contribution. We use funds to finance many of the fun events you can attend with your child, but also, and perhaps most importantly, we want to be
the
resource our teachers reach out to when they have a great idea, like the wonderful Parade of Readers put on by the first grade teachers last year. Additionally we just gave our annual back to school gift to teachers, all 75 certified teachers received a $50 gift card for classroom supplies and preparation.
This kind of giving unfortunately can't continue without fundraising. We are constantly looking for ways to bring more resources into our school, but one of the primary sources of PTA income is YOUR membership to our PTA. We look forward to seeing and working with all of you this year!

Summer Reading Lists and Assignments
|
|
Additional reading is required for students enrolled in Honors Courses.
Grade 6:
Where the Red Fern Grows
by Wilson Rawls
Grade 7:
A Wrinkle in Time
by Madeleine L'Engle
Grade 8:
The Looking Glass Wars
by Frank Beddor
Students will be required to complete a Book Talk and turn in no later than
Friday, August 17, 2018.
"Book Talks" will be recorded as an “In-Class” assignment counting as 40% of the student’s grade for the 1st nine-week grading period
HOW TO GIVE A BOOKTALK
[ OPENING ]
Hook your audience!
Read a quote from the book, ask a question of your audience, introduce the main character, vividly set the scene,
or do a combination of a few of these techniques.
Make sure to also give the title and author of the book.
[ SUMMARY ]
In a paragraph or two, summarize the plot of the book.
Be sure that your summary introduces the main character, identifies the problem, and leads us toward the solution--without giving away the ending!
[ IMPRESSION ]
Share your opinion!
How did you feel about the book?
What did you think of the author?
Would you recommend it to others?
What would you rate it?
[ CLOSING ]
Entice your audience!
Ask a rhetorical question, read a quote from the book, use a cliffhanger, or do a combination of these techniques.
Remember, your book talk should flow nicely, like a commercial.
It should not be a giant list answering these questions!
