Webb McCann Sowden Jr. ‘54
May 20, 1935 - August 18, 2018

Memorial Service: Friday, August 24, 11 A.M . Christ the King Catholic Church
4100 Colgate Avenue, Dallas
Former Tau Man of the Year (1983) and TKSEF president (1980s) Webb Sowden passed away on August 18 at age 83. Initiated into Kappa Sigma Tau Chapter in 1954, he later served as Grand Treasurer and was inducted into the Texas Cowboys organization. He graduated with honors from UT with an MBA in business and engineering in 1957. After graduation, he served in the United States Army where he rose to the rank of Captain. He then went on to build a substantial career first in investment banking and then in commercial real estate. He was very active in the Catholic community and was a leader in many social, civic, and charitable organizations in the Dallas area. In recognition of his many generous contributions to the Tau Chapter over the years, the Card Room in the Warren Residence Hall is named in his honor.

“Webb did so much for the Tau Chapter,” said pledge brother Dick Kilday ’54. "He was very organized and helped new members get a good foothold. Nice guy and funny, too. He and Malouf (Don Malouf ’54) were a comedy duo. We lost a really good soldier.”

Webb was a “storied host,” recalls Mike Sharpe ’79. "For many years, he and other Dallas-area Tau alums hosted a Texas-OU pre-game fest (complete with buses to the Cotton Bowl) which Kappa Sigs from all over the state attended. Webb continued this tradition when his son, Kip, joined the fraternity. For those few of us who grew up in Dallas, Texas-OU is still the pinnacle of the college football season!”

Webb is survived by his wife, Terry, and three grown children, 82 Tau initiate Webb McCann Sowden, III (“Kip”), Kerry Sowden Maguire, and Crozier Sowden Kimzey, as well as 10 grandchildren. He is predeceased by a daughter, Kimberly Anne Sowden.
