Spooky Staff Picks for October
We love fall! It's a great time to curl up with a good book (or five), and some of our favorite books during this time of year are the ones that turn up the chill factor. We asked staff to give us their favorite recommendations for spooky books and movies; you'll find the full list here. East Bend librarian Chandra is our go-to person for the scary and spooktacular; you'll also find a big list of her recommendations here. And remember--it's okay to leave the lights on.
Think & Drink with Author Rich Benjamin
What's it like to live in a magnificent place--that's also a White utopia? Join a lively conversation about Bend, community, belonging, social values, and the state of whiteness in America when author Rich Benjamin joins us for a Think & Drink conversation on 10/21 at 10 Barrel EastsideBetween 2007 and 2009, Benjamin embarked on a 26,909-mile journey through some of the whitest and least racially diverse--and fastest growing--communities in the United States, including Bend. His travels resulted in the book Searching for Whitopia: An Improbable Journey to the Heart of White America, which was selected as an Editor's Choice by Booklist and The American Library Association. If you cannot make it to the conversation, you can follow along via our Facebook livestream beginning at 7:00pm on 10/21. Benjamin will also take part in a conversation on "What's Race Got to Do with It?" on 10/21 at noon at OSU-Cascades.
Author! Author! Season Tickets on Sale Now
Season tickets are now on sale for the 2020 Author! Author! Literary Series. This season the Library Foundation focuses on three authors, who will all visit in the first three months of the year. This line-up of bestselling authors includes Barry Lopez (Arctic Dreams), Susan Orlean (The Library Book), and Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma). Series tickets are $75 for general admission, or $210 for premiere seating and invitations to the author receptions. Tickets for individual presentations are on sale starting October 22 (subject to availability) for $25 per author. The Author! Author! Literary Series is a fundraiser for the Deschutes Public Library Foundation, which raises funds to support library programs and services that are not paid for with tax dollars.

Everyone is invited to attend and meet the architects and provide feedback on preliminary ideas and designs.
