NOSORH Seeking Nominations for Community Stars
Do you know someone that goes above and beyond for rural health in Oklahoma? If so, nominate them as a Community Star, and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) could feature their story on National Rural Health Day.
Since 2015, the NOSORH Community Stars program has honored and given a personal voice to rural providers, advocates, and communities across the country. Their stories document just a few of the shining examples of service and dedication to the people who call rural America home. Ariel Lufkin, MD, Debra Button, and
Mercy Hospital Tishomingo were the Oklahoma recipients of Community Stars recognition in 2017.
View their stories.
Nominees can include individuals and organizations. The online nomination form is available on
NOSORH's website.
The deadline for nominations is August 24, 2018

Data Visualization: Changes in the Leading Causes of Death in Rural Oklahoma
A new data visualization prepared by the OSU Center for Rural Health provides a novel way of viewing the fifteen leading causes of death among rural Oklahomans over an 18-year span. The five leading causes (heart disease, cancer, stroke, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and accidents), remained unchanged from 1999 to 2016 although the relative rank of the latter three did vary.
Outside of the top five, influenza and pneumonia ranked 6th in 1999 but dropped to 11th in 2016. Deaths attributed to Alzheimer's disease ranked 11th in 1999 and moved up to 6th in 2016. Other notable changes in the rankings included suicide increasing from 10th to 8th, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis rising from 13th to 10th, essential hypertension and hypertensive renal disease moving from 15th to 12th, and septicemia dropping from 9th to 13th.
