"The text for 'O Come, O Come, Emmanuel' comes from a 7 verse poem that dates back to the 8th century. It was used in a call and response fashion during the vespers services. The original text created the reverse acrostic 'ero cras,' which means 'I shall be with you tomorrow.'" -Greg Scheer

In Remembrance of
Alliance Founders...
Luther Brewer
1933 - 2019
Alliance of Baptists’ founder Luther Brewer died in Cary, N.C. on Thursday, Nov. 28th at the age of 86. Luther’s ministry included serving as pastor of several congregations across the state of N.C., most notably as senior pastor of congregational partner, Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, Cary for 33 years.

“Early on,” noted close friend and Alliance founder Mahan Siler, “without the initial support from his congregation, Luther was active in the Alliance, serving on the committee that drafted the first covenant. On a more personal note, when Pullen Memorial stirred up controversy from our discernment process over same-sex unions in 1992, Luther was the only Baptist pastor who publicly supported the importance of our process. A few members left Greenwood Forest over his letter to the editor. Indeed, he embodied chesed , 'steadfast love.'”

Steve Jolly, a former officer in the Alliance, worked on staff with Brewer for ten years. “From Luther I learned what it meant to ‘love your people.’ He embodied the true Baptist ideal that, while a pastor is to be a moral compass for a congregation, it is the laity through which discerned decisions for change come. He lived out his faith that Christians will embrace the progressive change preached by prophetic pastors because one has earned the right to be trusted and heard. And that comes because they know you passionately love God and treasure them as God’s people.”

Walker Knight
1924 - 2019
Walker Knight (right) with Henry Crouch (left).
Walker Leigh Knight, founding member of the Alliance of Baptists, passed away on December 1, 2019. As a journalist and a minister of the Gospel, his life and work focused on themes of grace, compassion, inclusion, and reconciliation.

In his teens, Knight heard a preacher at Ridgecrest, North Carolina, rephrase the Beatitudes as follows: "Blessed are those who want to see things set right, for they will help accomplish it." Later, Knight would say, "I had no idea this verse would characterize my life from that time on."

Throughout his long career, as Knight worked to "set things right," he encountered frequent, prolonged, and often harsh criticism. For more than two decades, he was director of the Editorial Department of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board (HMB). Under Knight's direction, the organization's flagship magazine, Home Missions (later MissionsUSA), focused on topics such as racism, justice, the death of the family farm, the plight of migrant workers, and the psychological problems of the pastorate.
