READINGS

1 Kings 19:4-8: A despondent Elijah is hiding out in the desert, but God provides food for him, and then instructs him to get up and he travels to Horeb the mountain of God.
Psalm 34:1-8: A Psalm of thanksgiving and praise in which the psalmist encourages others to join him in praising God for God's redemption and salvation, and in which worshippers are encouraged to "taste and see" that God is good.
Ephesians 4:25-5:2: The apostle instructs the Ephesians believers on how to live as true followers of Christ. He encourages them to be honest with one another, to speak to one another in edifying ways, and to avoid anger, shouting and slander, choosing instead the way of forgiveness and compassion.
John 6:35, 41-51: Jesus proclaims himself as the bread of life, and responds to his critics by comparing the life that he gives to the manna that their ancestors ate in the wilderness - which could not keep them from death. Rather, Jesus, says, he gives life that does not end, and he reveals God to those who are drawn to him.

It doesn't take much thinking to recognise the benefits of living as Paul describes in our homes and communities. What we might not always realise, though, is that it is when we live like this that we make a positive impact on the world. As we follow the Bread of Life and live in ways that bring life to our families, friends, neighbours, strangers, and even enemies, we become little "breads of life" to our world. As we live in ways that extend Christ's invitation to others, so they begin to find life and compassion, forgiveness and restoration through us. And it starts with the small things like being honest, speaking graciously and being quick to forgive. As these simple daily acts become the habits by which we live, we find ourselves growing to the point where love for our enemies, even to the extent of grief at their suffering, becomes a regular feature of our lives as well. This Christlikeness, lived out daily, then contributes to the compassion, integrity and healing of our small section of the world, and becomes like a pebble dropped in a pond, spreading ripples out into the world. It's rather like Gandhi suggested: we become the change we want to see. If we long for a world that begins to reveal God's Reign on earth "as it is in heaven" this is the first step to becoming co-workers with God to make that happen.

Outreach Ministry News
Episcopal Relief and Development
is one of the international agencies supported by Grace Church. Here is a recent press release on efforts related to California wildfires that our donations contribute to:

Episcopal Relief & Development is partnering with the Diocese of Northern California to provide emergency support to help the most vulnerable in communities impacted by the Carr Fire that started on July 23.  The agency is providing support for rental assistance, short-term storage for recovered belongings, food, gasoline and replacement of lost household supplies.
"The diocese and congregations are working together taking into account lessons from last year's devastating fires," said Katie Mears, Senior Director of Episcopal Relief & Development's US Disaster Program. "It is heartening to witness the church work together at all levels to monitor the fires, assess damage and help those most in need."
The largest of the 17 wildfires currently burning throughout the state, the Carr Fire is heading west after tearing through Redding, a city located approximately 200 miles north of San Francisco. Evacuations began in the middle of the night on Thursday, July 26 which included many parishioners as well as their church, All Saints' Episcopal Church in Redding, California. The fire is considered only 30 percent contained as of Tuesday, but at this time, the evacuation orders for All Saints' neighborhood have been lifted, enabling clergy and leaders to return and reopen the church on Wednesday.
The Carr Fire, which the authorities said was caused by a mechanical failure in a vehicle, has grown to cover 110,000 acres by July 31. The blaze has killed at least six people as of August 1 and destroyed more than 1,000 homes.
Parish House Update
They cut through the stone this week, so we will have the entrance from the church to the new parish hall.
Interior entrance from church to Parish House

Really exciting and yes, the floor is at the same height between the church and the new building (had our fingers crossed this would work out as planned). The indentation in the concrete at the front door of the new building will have a mat designed for that spot which will complete the floor height.

The A/C units are all upon the deck now - rock free zone.
Insulation is being installed. The drains worked great with the recent rains. There is power for the lift which will be along the end of August.

The battens are on the front of the building which gives the structure a
Board and batten look with lower window frames
very different look. The first floor window frames are painted to match the bronze trim.
The front door has been ordered now as it is supposed to be built. Still working out a couple of lock details in relation t o the push bar on the inside of the door.

The interior design team is working on the kitchen details and colors inside.

Thanks a ll.

PB Curry Update

Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop and Primate Michael Curry is resting comfortably following surgery on Tuesday, July 31. According to the Presiding Bishop's family and his medical team, the surgery went well, as had been expected. Bishop Curry is resting, and a full recovery continues to be anticipated.

On July 25 Presiding Bishop Curry shared news that he had recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer and would be having surgery to remove the prostate gland.

Presiding Bishop Curry and his family are touched by the outpouring of prayers and well wishes. In their thankfulness, they ask for privacy during his recovery.
