Friendly Reminders & News

In light of the recent death of 13 year old actress Laurel Griggs following an Asthma attack,
I am encouraging all nurses to review what Asthma is and how we can intervene early. Article
  • Be prepared by knowing your patients green, yellow and red zones.
  • Understand your patients triggers and avoid them when possible.
  • Notify your Nursing Supervisor if you have any concerns regarding your patients status.
  • Understand early signs and symptoms that occur 1-2 days before a full blown Asthma attack which include the following:                                                                                                                            Shortness of breath, easily fatigued with physical activity, frequent cough (at night especially), issues with sleep, s/s similar to a cold, sneezing, scratchy throat, tired, irritable, wheezing with activity.
  • Remember wheezing progresses from an expiratory wheeze to an inspiratory and expiratory wheeze without treatment success.
  • If you need more information that is patient specific contact your Nursing Supervisor.
As the Clinical Educator I am preparing a CEU on Asthma. I will post the date when available and number of CEUs when completed.

It is common practice for the MD to order a blood level of current seizure medications if there is an increase in seizures.

Appreciating Nurses
 Published on May 04, 2017
Authored by Pfizer Medical Team

Whether you're at your doctor's office for a wellness visit or at the hospital for a procedure, one of the first people you'll meet is likely a nurse. We've all probably had interactions with nurses, but unless you're a nurse, you may not fully understand their role or appreciate what they do for their patients.
The many sides of nursing
Just as there are many types of doctors, there are many types of nurses. Registered nurses hold a degree in nursing and a state license, nurse practitioners can take on some of the duties of primary care doctors, and certified nurse-midwives help in the delivery of babies.
Nurses work in many different settings. These include schools, medical offices, hospitals, and even prisons. Overall, nurses may work in fast-paced settings, caring for several patients at once, all with various and ever-changing medical needs. A nurse's responsibilities (depending on their qualifications/credentials) may include:
  • Performing physical exams and evaluating the overall health of their patients.
  • Keeping a record of patients' medical histories.
  • Preparing and giving medicines and injections.
  • Caring for wounds or other injuries.
  • Reviewing test results and patient charts.
  • Organizing patients' care between healthcare professionals.
  • Counseling and educating patients.
  • Managing equipment and supplies, and other administrative tasks.

National Influenza Vaccination Week December 1-7

CDC established National Influenza Vaccination Week (NIVW) in 2005 to highlight the importance of continuing flu vaccination through the holiday season and beyond.

NIVW 2019 is scheduled for December 1-7, 2019

NIVW Timing
Previous flu vaccination coverage data have shown that few people get vaccinated against influenza  after the end of November.
  • CDC and its partners choose December for NIVW to remind people that even though the holiday season has begun, it is not too late to get a flu vaccine.
  • As long as flu viruses are spreading and causing illness, vaccination should continue throughout flu season in order to protect as many people as possible against flu.
  • Vaccination efforts should continue through the holiday season and beyond. It's not too late to vaccinate.
  • While vaccination is recommended before the end of October, getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial during most seasons for people who have put it off.
  • Even if have already gotten sick with flu, you can still benefit from vaccination since many different flu viruses spread during flu season and most flu vaccine protects against four different flu viruses.
The burden of flu
Flu isn't a "bad cold" and can result in serious health complications, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, and can lead to hospitalization. Flu can sometimes even lead to death.
  • Most people who get flu will recover in several days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop serious flu complications
  • All people are at risk of developing serious flu complications and certain groups are at higher risk. For people at higher risk, flu is more likely to lead to serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization or even death.
  • People at high risk of serious flu complications include young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease or lung disease, and people 65 years and older.
  • Anyone who gets flu can pass it to someone at high risk of severe illness, including children younger than 6 months who are too young to get a flu vaccine.

National Handwashing Awareness Week (Dec. 1-7)

Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick. Learn when and how you should wash your hands to stay healthy.

Wash Your Hands Often to Stay Healthy
You can help yourself and your loved ones stay healthy by washing your hands often, especially during these key times when you are likely to get and spread germs:
  • Before, during, and after preparing food
  • Before eating food
  • Before and after caring for someone at home who is sick with vomiting or diarrhea
  • Before and after treating a cut or wound
  • After using the toilet
  • After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
  • After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
  • After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
  • After handling pet food or pet treats
  • After touching garbage
Follow Five Steps to Wash Your Hands the Right Way
Washing your hands is easy, and it's one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community-from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.
Follow these five steps every time.
  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

World AIDS Day is observed each year on December 1 and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV, and remember those who have died. Started in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever-global health day

World Aids Day: Using Data to Guide Leadership and Partnership
Since the  agency first called attention to what we now know as AIDS, CDC has been at the forefront of efforts in the United States and abroad to prevent new infections, treat those with HIV, and stop AIDS-related deaths.

This year, the U.S. government's  World AIDS Day External theme reflects how we can all save lives through leadership and partnership. This is also an opportunity to consider the impact CDC has had since both the launch of the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) 15 years ago and also the more than 30 years that have passed since the first World AIDS Day.

For example, when PEPFAR was announced in 2003, only 50,000 people in Africa were on HIV treatment. In 2017, 21 million men, women, and children were on HIV treatment globally. CDC supports more than one-third of all people on treatment worldwide, including  more than half of those on PEPFAR-supported treatment. People with HIV who take HIV medicine as prescribed and get and keep an undetectable viral load have  effectively no risk of transmitting HIV to their HIV-negative sexual partners.

Contest-Winning Turkey Potpie

My family raves over this comforting dish with its flaky homemade crust and saucy meat and veggie filling. Sometimes, I cook a bird specifically with this potpie in mind-when we just can't wait for leftovers to make it! -Marie Elaine Basinger, Connellsville, Pennsylvania

TOTAL TIME:
Prep: 20 min. Bake: 40 min.
  YIELD: 6 servings.

Ingredients
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1-3/4 cups chicken broth
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 cups cubed cooked turkey
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups frozen peas and carrots
  • Pastry:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons celery seed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 4 to 5 tablespoons cold water
  • Whole milk, optional
Directions
  • 1. In a saucepan, saute onion in butter. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper until blended. Gradually add broth and milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Add the turkey, cheese and vegetables; cook until the cheese is melted. Set aside and keep warm.
  • 2. For the crust, combine flour, celery seed and salt in a bowl. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add enough water until dough forms a ball.
  • 3. Divide dough in half. Line a 9-in. pie plate with bottom pastry; trim even with edge of plate. Pour hot turkey filling into crust. Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pie; place over the filling. Trim, seal and flute edges. Cut slits in pastry. Brush tops with milk if desired.
  • 4. Bake at 375° for 40-45 minutes or until crust is golden brown.
