Meeting Abigail

We were so honored to help Abigail, age 15, with an amazing new bed. Abby was injured in a car accident in April and she is now living with a C4 spinal cord injury and quadriplegia. The Case Manager taking care of Abby at Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation contacted us to help her family modify their home with ramps. NAF was happy to provide a ramp in Abby's garage to help her enter her home but we were absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to provide her
with a top-of-the-line Hill-Rom
Versa Care Bed

hospital bed for her home. The $17,000 bed had been generously donated to NAF and in turn, we were proud to give it to Abby. The bed is a state-of-the-art marvel with weight based pressure redistribution to prevent pressure sores, low chair position for eating and caregiver assistance tools like "turn assist" to help Abby's mother take care of her daily needs. We delivered the 500 pound bed with the assistance of professional movers the day before Abby came home from rehab. Abby's mother, Esmeralda, is pictured here with the bed in their home. We're hoping that her mother can send us a photo of Abby for a future issue so everyone can see how beautiful she is.

Man's Best Friend

To the left is a photo of Arlo. We met Arlo on one of our visits to BIR to see a client and we were just blown away by how cute he is. He was rescued from a shelter the day before he was set to be euthanized and he now gets around with his "wheels" because his back legs are paralyzed. He visits spinal cord injured people in rehab and I'm pretty sure he raises their spirits. He was just too cute with his little vest and American flag!.

A Little More of What We Do for Clients

  • NAF helped a new client, Ruben, age 75, by providing lumber to his family so they could build a ramp on the front of his home. It was a first for NAF - we usually build the ramps but since Ruben lives in such a rural area, we were having trouble finding contractors who were able to do the work. Ruben's family finally came up with the idea that if NAF provided the lumber and other supplies, they could build the ramp. Ruben's daughter, Deena, sent us this great photo of the ramp they built. It looks like it's not only well built but a cat favorite! We're so happy to be able to help Ruben re-enter his home after leaving rehab.

  • Ronnie, age 29, was injured in a car accident in April. As a result, he is living with C4 spinal cord injury and quadriplegia. Ronnie needed a specialized rolling shower chair which his insurance would not pay for because "bath aids" are not covered. NAF was proud to provide the chair and hope that it's helping Ronnie and his caregivers with his bathing needs.

  • Jamie, age 52, is living with paraplegia as a result of a malignant spinal cord tumor at the thoracic level. Just like Ronnie, Jamie's insurance would not pay for her bath aids so NAF was happy to provide her with a padded tub bench as requested by her rehab case manager and occupational therapist. Jamie and her husband live in Rhome, TX and we are hoping that our assistance is making bathing easier for everyone.

We may have mentioned to you before the breakthroughs in technological research towards ending the permanent nature of paralysis.

Last issue we presented an article on an electrical implant that was used on four men who had been paralyzed for a number of years and has allowed them to regain various levels of bodily
function and feeling back.

This time we are sharing the article on the exo-robot that helps paralyzed individuals to walk. In this case one would strap on the 40 or so pound exo-skeletal remote controlled robot and use that, along with a walker for beginners, to stand and actually take steps. The exo-skeletal robot is one of the most innovative steps taken to get people to do just that, take steps again. What an encouragement to see what technology and research have allowed!

Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation
Presenting NAF with a Special Award!

NAF is proud to announce that we will be the 2014 recipient of the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation (BIR) Circle of Care Grant. BIR's dedication to providing quality rehabilitation is steeped in compassion and excellence. To honor those employees who have exemplified those two qualities, BIR will be having their 2nd Annual Circle of Care Awards celebration for their employees in October. All proceeds from the dinner will go directly to Neuro Assistance Foundation to help provide mobility equipment, vehicle modifications, home modifications and technology to newly spinal cord injured clients coming to us for assistance. NAF is honored to be selected as this year's recipient and we look forward to continuing our partnership with BIR. What an amazing group of people!

C'Mon, Let's Roll!!!

Are you physically handicapped and wishing you could get more involved in athletics? Well Mike and Sharyn King are here to tell you there is nothing stopping you!

Mike and Sharyn King are the founders of an organization called Powered to Move and their goal is to get you moving! They have a passion for encouraging others who live with disabilities through physical activity. One of the many wonderful aspects of this organization is a program they have called the wingman program. This program is a calling for able bodied individuals to volunteer as walkers or runners in a race pushing those disabled individuals who cannot push themselves. This is a great opportunity for fun and exercise.

NAF is happy to announce that Powered To Move Wingmen will be at our 6th Annual Hot Hatch Chile 5K. We're so honored to have them join us this year.

  sepia_stacked_hands.jpg

Are you looking for a support group for someone with a spinal cord injury or a caregiver? Beginning in June there will be a support group in Dallas for Caregivers and the ones they care for.

This new group will be an opportunity for caregivers and handicapped individuals to come together in Dallas and encourage, uplift, and support one another.

This group will be a time to share the trials you face as a caregiver or disabled citizen, discuss how you overcome these trials, and to encourage the disheartened. The next meeting will be held Thursday, July 31st at 7:00 PM. For more information please contact Ben or Joy Hetrick at bkj_hetrick8313@yahoo.com...

We Need Your Help

Donate

Volunteer

Change lives; make a difference.

Your $25 donation will help provide clean catheters to a paralyzed child for one month when their insurance won't cover the expense.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.

Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.

Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.
