One Health Day Symposium, November 1 - 2

One Health Day is celebrated November 3 worldwide. Within the state of Ohio, the month of November is also legislatively designated as One Health month. This year, on November 1 and 2, GOHi, OSU Extension and global partners will convene a One Health Day Symposium with 25 experts from around the world presenting and many more participating. Activities will include a poster session competition, scientific sessions, keynote dinner reception and One Health dialogue among key leaders. Further information can be found online. Registration is $125 USD with reduced costs for students and poster competition participants.

World Rabies Day celebrated on
September 28

A series of trainings for Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) city administrators, veterinarians and dog handlers culminated in a 6-week field training in 2017 to practice mass rabies vaccination strategies. Some of those who were trained have been actively providing rabies vaccination to owned dogs in the city and training additional staff to assist in this effort. Our team vaccinated 5,332 dogs in the first half of 2018.

GOHi executive members to serve in Global Consortium activities

Three of the GOHis Executive Committee members including Executive Director Wondwossen Gebreyes, Regional Director Getnet Yimer and Co-lead on Training Capacity Michael Bisesi will begin service in global consortia. Bisesi will serve as a member of the Subcommittee on Masters and Undergraduate Degrees in Global Health of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health. Getnet will serve in the University of Global Health Equity Scientific program planning committee for an upcoming scientific conference in Kigali, Rwanda. Gebreyes has recently joined the Graduate Planetary Health Education Working Group of the Planetary Health Alliance.

Twenty laptops donated to University of Gondar, Ethiopia

As part of GOHis resource stewardship plan and commitment to strengthen communications capacity building with the Ethiopian government, 20 laptops were donated to the University of Gondar. This project is part of a grant involving a collaboration between GOHi, the University of Gondars new School of Journalism and Communication, Assistant Professor Nicole Kraft and the Ohio State School of Communication, supported by the U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia.

GOHis hosts visiting scholar scientist from Brazil

Eleine Anzai, DVM, arrived at Ohio State in August 2018 for a five-month visiting scholarship to work on genomics of Mycobacterium bovis. Anzai is a PhD candidate at the University of São Paulo and holds a permanent position at the University of Blumenau, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Anzai is mentored by Wondwossen Gebreyes, DVM, PhD, (College of Veterinary Medicine) and Shu-Hua Wang, MD, MPH, TM, (College of Medicine) and will be at Ohio State until January 2019. Her work and scholarship are being funded by GOHi and CAPES, a foundation within the Ministry of Education in Brazil.

Connect and Collaborate supports GOHi project in China

GOHi team members Drs. Joan-Miquel Balada-Llasat, Luciana DaCosta, Xueling Pan and Shu-Hua Wang were recently awarded the Ohio State Connect and Collaborate grant for their project entitled, Improving diagnosis of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in human and cattle in China. Balada-Llasat and Wang visited Jinan, China in September to further establish collaborations with Shangdong University School of Public Health, Shangdong Provincial Chest Hospital and The Dairy Center of Shangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences for implementation of the project.

External Advisory Board member spotlight

Joyce Turks career spanned 35 years as Foreign Service Officer and Civil Service employee with focused experience in agricultural and livestock program management after serving as a livestock advisor in the U.S. Peace Corps-Philippine Islands. Turk is a frequent invited speaker at annual meetings of the American Association of Bovine Practitioners and to university classes. She was a multi-year recipient of USAIDs Meritorious Performance Awards and is listed in Who's Who of American Women.

Turning sick care into well care for homebound older adults and their pets

POP (Pet Owner and Pet) Care creates an inter-professional team consisting of a nurse practitioner, a veterinarian and a social worker to address the healthcare needs of homebound older adults and their pets. The expectation is that the improved health of the person-pet dyad will correlate with better health and well-being outcomes for the pet owner. Learn more about this innovation grant awarded to Bernadette Melnyk, PhD, RN, APRN-CNP, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN, Ohio State College of Nursing, Laurie Millward, DVM, MS, DACVP, Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine and Holly Dabelko-Schoeny, PhD, Ohio State College of Social Work.
