There are several evening events this week I want to make sure you know about.
National Night Out is Tuesday, August 7 and several municipalities and civic associations are hosting events across District 3 that evening. My staff will stop by each event to hand out materials and speak with residents. We look forward to seeing you at your neighborhood's event!

NBC4, Telemundo, and the Woodlawn/ West Lanham Hills TNI Team are partner
ing to host a Back to School event at the Woodlawn Community Center, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
There will be food, music, activities, and more! Youth attendees will receive free backpacks and school supplies (while they last!).
Please plan to stop by this exciting community event. All are welcome!
The County Council is in recess until Tuesday, September 4. I anticipate September will be an incredibly busy month for the Council as we review dozens of pieces of legislation and continue the intense work on the Zoning Ordinance Rewrite legislation. I'm very happy that the bills detailed below were adopted on July 24. Others will be discussed in September.
CB-12-2018 increases recycling requirements for business and commercial establishments throughout the County, requiring that all businesses in the County have a recycling bin that is at least equally sized and equally convenient as every trash can on the establishment's property. The legislation explicitly states that this applies to hotels/motels and gas stations, as those are two businesses which generally don't offer many recycling opportunities. I appreciate several of our newer businesses, including The Hotel at the University of Maryland and Whole Foods, which are truly leading the way through recycling, composting and trash opportunities.
CB-29-2018 establishes a Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy Program (C-PACE) in Prince George's County. This will allow commercial property owners to access financing for qualifying energy efficiency and clean energy improvements for their buildings through loans from participating lenders.
To prepare for the addition of two at-large Council Members this December, the Council has also adopted a new committee structure and updates to items such as the number needed for quorum, a two-thirds vote, etc. to be effective in December.
The new committees will be:
- Education and Workforce Development
- Health, Human Services and Public Safety
- Planning, Housing and Economic Development
- Government Operations and Fiscal Policy
- Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment
- General Assembly
The County Council accomplishes most of its work during committee sessions. I believe this new structure
offers an important opportunity to reframe some of the critical conversations happening in the County and build synergies among different agencies. Five Council Members will serve on each committee and assignments will be made in December.

M-NCPPC's Department of Parks and Recreation is collecting the contact information for Prince George's County Veterans, ages 60 & older, in order to invite them to a special Senior Veterans Luncheon being held in November 2018.
If you know a Veteran who resides in the county, and is 60 years old or older, who would like to be invited to this special luncheon, please have them fill out the
form online prior to August 31. If they don't have access to a computer, perhaps you could assist them in submitting the online form.
