Harvey Heroes Mural Dedication Thursday, August 16

Debut of a Thank You: Mural artist Larry Crawford's tribute to the heroes of Hurricane Harvey will be formally presented to the public on Thursday, August 16.

Nearly one year ago, Hurricane Harvey dumped 52" inches of rain across Houston, bringing widespread devastation, but also bringing out the best in people helping one another. In appreciation of those selfless helpers, Westchase District will formally dedicate its newest mural -  which commemorates the first responders and civilian rescuers who reacted bravely in the aftermath of Harvey - at a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Thursday August 16

The 20 x 100-foot mural is painted along the banks of a Harris County Flood Control District channel, immediately adjacent to our Westchase District trail system at the confluence of the Brays Bayou Connector Trail and Wilcrest Connector Trail. Parking for the event will be available at the nearby METRO Westchase Park & Ride location, 11050 Harwin Drive.

City officials, representatives from police and fire agencies and members of the Louisiana Cajun Navy are expected to attend. The general public is invited to join them as Westchase District celebrates all the good that exists in Houston, especially in times of crisis.

Crews Working Where the Sidewalk Ends...No More

Crews from Allende Construction poured concrete last week to close the gap in the sidewalk that runs along the northbound Beltway frontage road between Westpark Drive and Richmond Avenue.

The 200-feet extension connects the sidewalks adjacent to First Methodist Houston and the Heights at Westchase apartment community, providing a crucial link for pedestrians.

This is one of many projects identified by Westchase District's ped-bike plan to improve access for pedestrians and cyclists.

Vote for one of Westchase's Own in Charity Competition

WHAM's Sonya Scott (left) is shown collecting school supplies for area students in need.
Exciting news from our friends at West Houston Assistance Ministries: Sonya Scott, client services director, has been chosen as one of five finalists in the WellCare/TexanPlus Champions Competition.

The contest honors local champions who are making a difference in the lives of older Americans in Southeast Texas. Sonya's passion for serving the elderly has been evident throughout her personal life and over sixteen years of employment in client services at WHAM. She will be recognized during the Houston Astros' pre-game ceremony on August 31.

Sonya is also in a competition where online voters will select the WellCare/TexanPlus Grand Champion who will designate a charity of their choice to receive a $25,000 donation. Sonya has chosen WHAM to receive the $25,000 award, provided she can collect the highest number of votes in the competition. The voting has started, and it's up to us to help Sonya win the contest! Quillian Center Pools Still Open Through August 24

Looking to cool off this month? Westchase District has you covered: one of the District's most recognizable attractions (at least to families with young kids) is the Noah's Ark Pool, at 10570 Westpark Drive.

A ministry of First Methodist's Quillian Center, the facility is geared to families with toddlers, preschoolers and elementary-school-aged children. An ark structure with animals is centered in a shallow pool with three slides, a crawl-through, a mushroom water drop, a rainbow slide and animals spraying water.

Quillian Center also features a full-sized swimming pool with dual slides and two diving boards. The pools are open weekdays through August 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The daily admission rate for both pools is just $7.50 per person. Children under the age of one are admitted free. Active military members and seniors age 65+ will be admitted for $5.00. For more information, call 713-781-9195.
