Banana Peels and Climate Change: A Daily Examen for Creation Care
Philip Sakimoto, Ph.D., University of Notre Dame, Astrophysicist, and former Acting Director of NASA’s Space Science Education Public Outreach Program, and Sister Damien Marie Savino, FSE, Ph.D., Dean of Science and Sustainability, Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, will present their response to Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’ :  Care for our Common Home. Their presentation addresses climate change in light of science and faith and suggests practical steps to increase our personal caring for creation.

St. Valentine
(February 14)
A priest around 280 A.D. Saint Valentine was a devout Christian who felt any young couple ready to take vows should be married in a Christian wedding. Emperor Claudius felt strongly that young, single men are more valiant as soldiers rather than married men.
 St. Valentine was jailed and tortured for his beliefs and acts. Valentine's jailer's blind daughter took a liking to Valentine and they became friends. Valentine wrote her on the day of his execution and signed it "Your Valentine" before he was beheaded on February 14 by order of Emperor Claudius. Saint Valentine is the patron saint of lovers.
American Heart Month
The annual celebration began in 1963 to encourage Americans to join the battle against heart disease. A presidential proclamation pays tribute each year to researchers, physicians, public health professionals and volunteers for their tireless efforts in preventing, treating and researching heart disease, which is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Hospitals and health systems around the country celebrate American Hearth Month by helping to raise awareness in their communities about heart disease.

World Sick Day
February 11
The Catholic Church marks the annual day of World Sick Day on February 11, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. The theme of this year's observance is "Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest," taken from Matthew's Gospel (11:28).

Christ’s words of solidarity, comfort and hope, the Pope explains, is for the very many simple people, the poor, the sick, sinners, those who are marginalized by the burden of the law and the oppressive social system... The mercy and comforting presence of Jesus, he says, embraces people in their entirety, each person in his or her health condition, discarding no one, but rather inviting everyone to share in His life and to experience His tender love.

The Pope explains that Jesus does so because He Himself became frail, endured human suffering and received comfort from His Father.
Only those who personally experience suffering, the Pope argues, are able to comfort others.
