Thank you to North Canyon Medical Center (NCMC) for your generosity!
NCMC donated much needed learning supplies to many of the programs housed in the CSI Health Sciences and Human Services building, as well as the Vet Tech program. The supplies that couldn't be used by students were given to Care Convoy to benefit the needs of many in Mexico and other countries.
"We are grateful for the partnership that we have with this facility," said Melisa Robinson, CSI ASNP Clinical Instructor and Lab Coordinator.

The Center for Instructional Excellence's theme for spring 2020 faculty professional development is STUDENT ENGAGEMENT. The focus will be on specific strategies faculty can implement during the First 4 Weeks of each semester to assist students in meeting their goals.
At the recent
Complete College America Convening
,
Colorado State University presented their
approach to student success
.
It included a very successful faculty engagement component called the First 4 Weeks*. Using a checklist organized into best practice categories with related activities, faculty members can reflect on recommended strategies to reinforce their current practices while identifying new goals.
Using this checklist, during each month this spring the CIE will publish Good Read articles about select First 4 Week best practices. At the end of the month we will follow up with face to face and webinar workshops to talk through the checklist and activities.
Go to the CIE website for Good Reads, the First 4 Week checklist, and workshop schedule information.
|
*CSU uses The First 4 Weeks as a part of their overall Student Success Strategy. The First 4 Week Checklist is adapted from The Institute for Learning and Teaching, Colorado State University and the "First Four Weeks Survey," St. Louis Community College, Updated 2019.

Healthy Life Blog
: In recognition of Heart Month and Wear Red Day tomorrow February 7th, we wanted to share some heart health tips, which will help prevent and manage health risks for cardiovascular disease.
It's never too late to start living a healthier life. A few simple steps can put you on the path to a younger heart age and better overall health. Consider these tips to get started:
- If you smoke, quit. Quitting can be hard and often requires help and support. Talk with your doctor for help.
- See your doctor to get your blood pressure and cholesterol checked. Uncontrolled high blood pressure and high cholesterol increase your risk of heart attack and stroke. You won't know if you're at risk until you get tested because there are no symptoms.
- Take your medicines as your doctor advises. You may have medicines to control high blood pressure or cholesterol. Don't stop taking them without talking with your doctor.
- Get regular exercise. Walking, biking, and swimming are great choices to keep your heart healthy. Try to exercise for 30 minutes, five days a week.
- Focus on a heart-healthy diet. This includes lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein like chicken and fish. Minimize foods like fried foods, fast food, and sugary desserts.
- Aim for a healthy weight. Calculate your BMI online, or talk with your doctor. Losing just 5 to 10 pounds has heart benefits.
By adopting these heart-healthy habits, you can reduce your heart age. You'll have a lower risk of heart attack, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and other health problems.

We are excited to announce the second year of the Statewide GEM Teaching Awards!
A bit of background: for several years now all of our general education faculty have been working tirelessly to design courses that adhere to the state Way of Knowing Outcomes (Written Communication, Oral Communication, Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing, Artistic and Humanistic Ways of Knowing, Mathematical Ways of Knowing, Scientific Ways of Knowing, and GNED/Wellness). Many have participated in state level meetings and all have worked to revise courses, assignments, and assessments. In celebration of this work, the State Board of Education is recognizing outstanding faculty in each of these Way of Knowing areas. Last year was the inaugural year for the awards and we're excited that they are continuing this year as well.
The State Board faculty recognitions officially happen in September at the State General Education Summit, but our campus-wide nomination process will start now and open nominations will continue through February 18th.
Nominations will be accepted from everyone who would like to participate (students, fellow faculty, department chairs, etc.). Nominating a general education faculty member is easy! Simply send an email of nomination that includes the name of the faculty member and the course(s) for which the instructor is being nominated. In the email, include reasons to highlight this instructor and the outstanding work that he/she does with students.
N
omination emails should be sent to Amy Barker at
abarker@csi.edu
by February 18th.
After the 18th, our own internal process will decide upon our campus nominees to the larger statewide awards. Winners at the campus level will be asked to provide a short vita as well as a sample general education assignment to represent CSI at the state level.
Please feel free to share this email with anyone (especially your students) who might be interested in nominating an outstanding general education faculty member. We have the best general education faculty in the state and it's exciting to have a venue where they can be recognized for the awesome work they do with students!! Let me know if you have any questions and we look forward to all of the nominations.
Thank you!

Healthline.com Health News
After reading the ingredients and calories in these cookies, you're going to think there's no place in your life for these cookies. Not so fast. All things in moderation, right? And, there are better choices than others and they all taste pretty great. Find the ordered list online from
healthiest to unhealthiest, and suggestions for indulging your sweet tooth in a healthy way below.
- Focus on eating an overall healthy diet. The article recommends the Dietary Guidelines for AmericansTrusted Source, the Mediterranean diet, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, and the American Heart Association healthy diet guidelines as all being good choices.
- Avoid labeling foods as "off-limits" or "bad." This can often backfire, leading to cravings and overeating, says the article.
- Practice mindful eating. The article suggests eating cookies when you aren't ravenously hungry so you can savor the experience. This will allow you to eat fewer cookies and feel more satisfied.
- Buy only your favorite cookies. While certain cookies have a better nutritional profile than others, the article says it can sometimes be a better choice to buy the cookies you truly like. Eating a cookie you don't enjoy can leave you feeling deprived and resentful, ultimately leading to overeating.
- Keep an eye on portion sizes. Nutritionist and author Shereen Jegtvig, who teaches at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, says it's important to note that suggested serving sizes are usually only a few cookies rather than the entire box.
- Gluten-free cookies aren't necessarily more healthy. While they're better for those who have a genuine need to avoid gluten, Jegtvig says gluten-free cookies are nutritionally no better than their gluten-containing counterparts.
- Buy fewer boxes. Jegtvig suggests buying fewer boxes so there's not a temptation to eat more than what you originally intended.
- Make a donation. If you want to support your local Girl Scouts but don't want the temptation of having cookies in your home, you can donate cookies to U.S. military members serving overseas. You pay for the cookies and the Girl Scouts do the rest. You can also make a monetary donation to the Girl Scouts.
- Balance your calorie intake. Jegtvig suggests cutting back elsewhere or exercising a bit more to make up for the additional calories.

"Wonder of the heavens has been an innate human trait predating even civilization. It has inspired the most profound advances of our culture and scientific understanding. One pinnacle of this tradition has been the conception of Gravitation by Newton and then its adaptation by Einstein in his 'General Relativity' of the Cosmos. I will describe the UGO project, whose dramatic discoveries of gravitational wave 11signals11 from actual Black Holes (both predicted by general relativity) inspires a new vista of heavenly wonderment. Emphasizing this context, I hope to show UGO meriting the same justification as more easily appreciable BIG SCIENCE (thus expensive) projects: planetary exploration; decoding the human genome; broad band internet. To be sure, the technical marvels of the UGO facilities will be featured! As was the sense for our moon shots, the fact that we can inspire talent and marshal resources to make such dreams happen has a justification in communal pride."
Dr. Kells received his B.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from Caltech and the University of Chicago, respectively. Following his matriculation, he went to work developing technologies for particle colliders at Fermilab outside Chicago, and later, deep-field cameras for the iconic 200" telescope atop California1s Palomar Mountain. The capstone of his career came as a member of the Nobel Prize-winning Caltech team that achieved the first direct detection of the exquisitely small spacetime vibrations of gravitational waves in 2015. He retired to Twin Falls in 2017, where he continues to pursue his research interests.
