MEMBERSHIP IDEA:  Get Involved - Join PTA

The membership campaign we used this year was "Get Involved - Join PTA."  Our marketing began at registration with a PTA table set up just inside the doors to the gym with membership information, candy, and clothing deals on school uniforms.  We continued to set up a table at school functions, and PTA events (like family movie night) to try to reach out to families when they were at the school.  Our principal is very supportive of our PTA and always notifies us of upcoming events at the school so that we have an opportunity to set up a display.  We have sent home flyers that give specific ideas of how a parent can get involved, no matter how much or how little time they have.  The flyers are sent in English and Spanish, as we have many Spanish speaking families at our school.  We have a checklist on the flyer that allows the parents to sign up to help with any of our activities with either their time, or by donating items, such as candy for our Seasonal Candy Grams.  This checklist and packet of information is also given to new students and families that transfer in during the school year so that they have an opportunity to see what our PTA does.  The PTA membership has increased from 28 members to 40 members!

School Ambassador Fellows
The US Dept of Education Office of Elementary and Secondary Education is accepting applications for the 2020-21
School Ambassador Fellowship Program.  The agency designed this program to enable outstanding teachers, principals, counselors, psychologists, social workers, and other school-based professionals who interact with students on a daily basis to bring their expertise to the Department and expand their knowledge of the national dialogue about education.  In turn, fellows facilitate the learning and input of other educators and community members.  As in previous years, applicants may choose to apply as Washington Fellows -- a full-time appointment where fellows are based in residence at the agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C. -- or as Campus Fellows -- a part-time appointment where fellows collaborate with the agency while maintaining their regular school responsibilities in their home communities.  The  application period closes on December 31 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

How to Handle Homework

While most families have heard of  Gonoodle  and  Learning Station,  which have fabulous videos that get our children up and moving, UNICEF has a list of  "brain breaks"  that don't require a screen.  Get those kids (and the whole family) up and moving!  These breaks can reduce stress, increase focus, and help the adults in the room regain control if a group starts to get too rambunctious.
One idea from UNICEF:

5-4-3-2-1!

In this simple but very fun game, kids are encouraged to partake in five different physical activities in descending order. For example, you could get them to do 5 jumping jacks, 4 star jumps, three sit ups, two hops and one hand clap. Mix it up and think lots of different activities you can do. Encourage activities that can be performed collaboratively as well to further add to the benefits of this brain break.
Reducing Screen Time

Does your child spend too much time in front of the television, computer, or on their mobile device? Excessive amounts of screen time can be unhealthy and lead to problems like obesity, insomnia, and anxiety.  Use these tips to help your kids limit their screen time.
