Weekly News For
Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church
August 5, 2018
This Sunday

Dear Friends,

Any so it begins - the process of cleaning out my office as my time here at Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church is drawing to a close. There are all the file cabinets and my desk to clean out which means determining what needs to be pitched and what ought to be saved. I am discovering precious little needs to be saved. In reality, the file and desk drawers were never completely cleared out from previous persons who used the office so my waste basket is pretty full each week.

Then there are the books. What to keep and what to pass along. My husband has already filled up the new bookcase he bought for his home office with the books he is keeping in his retirement. I will have to clear out my bookcases at home if I want to keep any books from my church office. There is no more room for more books. So, you will find that I have put give away books for anyone who wants them on a table in the fellowship room. Again, many of these books I inherited when I took over my office. Please take them and enjoy them.

There is something cleansing about hoeing out, be it an office or a life. There is a sense of being lighter and less encumbered as one gets rid of all that clutters one's work space and one's life. There is more space for the important things in life to move in, such as the energy of God's love and the flow of the Holy Spirit.

Time now to pitch a few more files and to make more room!
Blessings,
Linda

P.S. Hope to see you in church for Communion this Sunday

This Sunday is also Sundae Sunday - Please consider staying after the service and enjoy this cool treat in the Chittick Lounge.

Frank's gifts of administration, generating enthusiasm, vision and brainstorming paths to solving problems while all the time working hard, make us excited for our program.

We know you share in our excitement of him accepting this position and ask that you prayerfully support this important program for our children.

Embracing Forgiveness

This past week, Linda Chase concluded her bible study on Embracing Forgiveness by BarbaraCrafton.  This was a study that was done  twice due to its effectiveness.  Below are some highlights from the book and study for those who struggle with forgiveness.  The DVD is available for loan.

You Have Heard It Said....
But I Say to You...

One of the reasons that we have a hard time with forgiveness is that we hold incorrect ideas about what it is.  Perhaps we are trying to do things in forgiveness that are not life-giving, edifying and useful.

Here is a review of six things that Barbara refutes as characteristics of forgiveness.  For each one, there is a quote or two from Barbara to remind you of the fullness  of her teaching on that matter.

You have heard it said that to forgive is to forget, but I say to you forgiveness is not forgetting.
People don't forget important chapters in their lives.  Forgiveness does not erase history.

Your history has happened and it deserves to be honored.  If it's not honored it's liable to be repeated.

You have heard it said that to forgive is to acquit, but I say to you forgiveness is not acquittal or exoneration.
We still have to pay the price for what we do.  If someone is acquitted it means they didn't do anything.

We only forgive those who are guilty of something.

You have heard it said that to forgive is to pardon, but I say to your forgiveness is not pardon.
Even when forgiven, you may still have to pay for what you did.

When you are pardoned, you don't have consequences.

You have heard it said that forgiveness is a matter of degree, but I say to you forgiveness is not a matter of degree.
We cannot say that the power of God is not greater than these things.

It might take us a while to wrap our minds around this one; and longer to wrap our hearts around it.

"Okay" has nothing to do with anything when we're talking about forgiveness.

You have heard it said that forgiveness  is led by feeling, but I say to you forgiveness  is not feeling.
If forgiveness is a feeling and if somehow, in order to forgive, I have to develop warm fuzzy feelings about someone who did something horrible to me; or with regard to my own shame, if someone I have to develop feelings of being welcomed and loved before I can be forgiven- feelings can't lead me to that state.

You have heard it said that forgiveness is all about the past, I say to you forgiveness is not about the past.
Forgiveness is about the present and the future.  Who do I want my future to belong to:  the guy who hurt me in 1998 or me and God?  I want to live my life with God.  I don't want to give it to anyone else.  I want my present to be mine.  I want my furte to be mine.

Church Picnic
picnic

Have you signed up for the Church picnic?  Like last year, it will be held at Riverfront Park, Point Pleasant Boro, on August 26 from 10:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m.

Worship with Communion begins at 10:00 a.m. followed by the picnic under the Pavilion. The theme this year is :  "OUR HOPES AND DREAMS AS A CHURCH"

What are you thankful for that God has already done for our Church?
What ministry has especially grown your faith?
What would you love to see God do for our church?
How does your faith play a part in the hope you have for your church?
In what area would you like to grow spiritually?
What is your prayer for the future of our church?
"For nothing will be impossible with God." Luke 1:37

The annual all-church picnic is a memorable occasion where families relax and enjoy an afternoon outdoors together, sharing food, conversation, and playing games.  Attached to the Maxson Avenue Municipal Beach is a beach area that can be used for fishing or crabbing.

We ask that you sign up to bring either an Appetizer, Salad or Dessert. We will have Jersey Mike's Subs this year. Look for the yellow sign up sheet in the Narthex.

As in years past, we will make every effort to reach our goal of 100 people to sign up.  Currently we are under 50 people right now.  Help us reach our goal!
