Advent Imagining:
Dreams and Visions;
this Sunday after worship
It's never too early to dream of light, shining in the darkness, which the darkness cannot and will not overcome. Let's do some dreaming and imagine together how, in our worship, we can prepare the way of the Lord this Advent season.
We'll look at Advent texts, read again the prophets promise of One who will save the outcast, gather us in and bring us home; read Mary's song of wonder and joy; ponder what good come from a small town in the littlest clan - then look for the points of connection and light in our own time and place.
If you're willing to ponder how we might create worship that works - capturing the hope of the season in the midst of our world plan to meet up in the fellowship hall following worship this Sunday.

SAVE THE DATE: CPC Fall Blood Drive
Wednesday, December 5
IMPORTANT! If you plan to participate in the blood drive,
please do not donate blood elsewhere after October 10.
Hurricane Florence precipitated a crisis-level need for blood donations, but donors may give in the days and weeks following the hurricane and still be eligible for the CPC drive on December 5, if they do not give after October 10.
The fall blood drive is coming up Wednesday, December 5, 2:30 - 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will be working with
The Blood Connection
, a blood services provider used by most Triangle hospitals.
In addition to fully staffing the drive, Blood Connections
also offers the "Faith in Action" program, where the church receives a check reflecting $10 per successful donation. Given our previous average of successful donations, this will be $350 - $500. CPC is designating these funds to our Health and Wholeness Ministry.

Donate:
Take a leaf from the Donation Tree located in the Narthex and buy/collect items we'll package together on November 3 to send to agencies in our community and beyond. Our needs include personal care/ hygiene items, relief supplies, non-perishable snacks, school supplies, and more.
All donated items should be delivered to CPC by Sunday, October 21.

Bring your family, friends and neighbors and take part in one of more than 15 separate
Be The Hands
projects including yardwork, meal preparation, friendly visits to area senior-living centers, car inspections, food collections, painting, hygiene/care/snack kit assembly, card writing and much more. We've added a number of new and interesting projects this year, so take a chance and try something you've never done before!

, so no matter your age, interests or talents, there's a place for you! Additional project details will be coming soon. Registration begins on Sunday, October 14!

day kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on November 3 with prayers and song. Come and join hands together as we ask for God's blessing, strength and guidance for the day ahead.
Fellowship:
Whether you're able to work a lot, a little or not at all, join your church family for dinner and a time of sharing about the day in the CPC Fellowship Hall from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This meal is provided free of charge to all who are able to attend.

Please join us on October 14 as Fair Trade marks five years at CPC!
The Fair Trade table will be open that morning outside, weather permitting, or in the hallway outside Fellowship Hall before and after the 11:00 a.m. worship service. The Fair Trade team will host the coffee fellowship after the 11:00 a.m. service, too.
Please note that the next Fair Trade date after that will be November 18 at the Alternative Gift Market.

Triple F Group News
Our speaker for the October 15th meeting will be Elina, who is one of the first participants in Clothed in Hope and currently serves as Director of the program in Zambia. It provides sewing programs to lift families in Zambia out of poverty. Program founder Amy Bardi introduced us to the program two years ago, and we have been supporters ever since. We look forward to meeting Elina. Meeting time: Monday, October 15, 10:00 a.m., Room 100.

Page Turners Book Club
Page Turners
will meet in the church parlor on Monday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. We will be discussing The Wonder by Emma Donoghue.

Cool Books Club
The Cool Books Club will meet on Tuesday, November 6th, (Election Day) at 7 p.m. at Peg Giesbrecht's house. Our book for this month is Everybody, Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People by Bob Goff. This book is a New York Times best seller.

Not So Silent Silent Retreat, November 9 and 10

Not So Silent Silent Retreat, starting at 5:00 p.m. Nov. 9 to 4:00 p.m. Nov. 10, at Cedar Cross Retreat Center in Louisburg (
www.cedarcrossretreat.org). Cost is $75, which includes one night's lodging and 3 wonderful meals.
This year's theme is

Gracyn was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina but spent much of her life in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She is a civil engineer for Booth & Associates in Raleigh.
At Hillsboro Presbyterian Church in Nashville, TN, Gracyn was involved with the choir and handbell program, and also served on the nominating committee. She hopes to be involved in music at CPC at some future time. In her spare time, Gracyn enjoys travel, reading, crafting and baking.
Gracyn and her husband Alan, CPC's Youth Fellowship Coordinator, have a son Michael, who will turn 2 in January.

Garret is originally from San Jose, California, and Valerie grew up on the opposite coast, in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. She spent many of her adult years in Shrewsbury, and was a member of First Congregational Church. She enjoyed being a part of the church's music ministry.
Garret's interests are music and soccer: Valerie's are also music, in addition to cooking and travel. As a member of CPC, she is interested in eventually becoming involved in the music program.
Valerie and Garrett have two children: Sylvie Cullen who is in 9th
grade at Cary High School, and Gavin, who is a 4th
grader at Northwoods Elementary School.

Sara was born in Poughkeepsie, New York but moved to Cary when only four years old. She has lived here since then, and is a graduate of Cary High School. A talented musician, Sara teaches piano in her home.
As a member of Peace Presbyterian Church in Cary, Sara was involved in their puppet ministry and music ministries: choir, handbells, orchestra, accompanying the youth choir and worship services.
Her interests are reading, playing the piano and ukulele, volunteering, gardening, and devising fun crafts for her daughters.
As a member of CPC, Sara is interested in restarting the Rainbow Choir, and possibly establishing a preschool music program. She also enjoys volunteering with and for refugees.
Sara is married to Justin Dickson, and they are the parents of two daughters:
Ellie Dickson, who attends Cary Elementary School, and Norah, who is just two and a half.

Eric and Becky grew up in Warren, Pennsylvania, and have also lived in Harrisburg and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in addition to several years in Providence, RI for graduate school. Both are former teachers and government workers. Now retired, they spent 16 years in Lithuania as PCUSA missionaries, teaching at LCC International University in Lithuania.
Eric and Becky come to us from Pine Street Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg, where they taught adult Sunday School and served on the Presbytery Mission Committee.
Eric has served as an ordained elder and as a deacon in former Presbyterian churches.
Both enjoy reading and traveling. As members of Cary Presbyterian, the Hinderliters are interested in being involved with ecumenical activities, adult education, as well as issues at the Presbytery level.

Duncan grew up in Louisburg and Elizabethtown, North Carolina, but has lived all over the Southeast. He was most recently member of Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where he was actively involved. Duncan was a Sunday School teacher to first and second graders, and also taught a class to middle schoolers. He has also served as a deacon.
Although now retired, Duncan is active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary - the volunteer arm of the Coast Guard. He loves to cook and volunteers in food service for the auxiliary; he also enjoys going out on large ships.
Sandy is a native of Raleigh, but has lived in Greensboro and most recently in Charleston, SC. She too was active at Circular Congregational, chairing various committees, including one that developed a policy for the use of church facilities by the larger community.
Sandy has been involved in non-profit management and programming, and HR volunteer management. She has already met with the Prayer Shawl Group, and is interested in book clubs, as well as Social Justice and Older Adult ministries. Sandy is a Chicago Cubs fan.

Mackenzie grew up in Pittsboro, North Carolina and is junior at Northwood High School in Pittsboro. She loves music, particularly singing and playing the flute, and participates in the concert and marching bands at school.

Lisa grew up in Annapolis, Maryland and Ft. Rucker, Alabama. However she has lived many places including Florida, where she graduated from high school. She is a software engineer at Fort Bragg.
At Cross Roads Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania, Lisa attended Sunday School and volunteered for various church events. She has already become involved at Cary Presbyterian Church as one of the team teachers of adult Sunday School.
Lisa has many interests: health and fitness, tennis, the performing arts, going to museums and relaxing at the beach.

Contribute to Cary Presbyterian Preschool's Diaper Drive
CPP, a ministry of Cary Presbyterian Church, is hosting a diaper drive to restock supplies at the Diaper Bank of North Carolina (ncdiaperbank.org) as they ship hygiene kits to affected areas and continue to serve our local community. For the next 3 weeks there will be a box in the preschool hallway to receive diapers and wipes. Open packages are welcome. Of particular need are size 4 and 5.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance also offers the following advice from their long record of service: Unneeded or inappropriate donations become a disaster in themselves, because they have to managed and stored or moved and in some cases thrown out. DO NOT SEND OR GIVE CLOTHES.
We cannot take items into the disaster area for which there is no request and there is not a specific place to take it. Unneeded items become a burden to the survivors and their community.
God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam...
