Common VIEW uses the Whole School Whole Child Whole Community (WSCC) model when interacting with each district and coordinating services between agency partners. This is done to eliminate gaps and reduce redundancies across the many initiatives and funding streams and to foster teamwork among school health and education professionals in the school.
In this webinar, participants will learn how diverse partners in Lorain County, Ohio are using the WSCC model to implement policy, systems, and environmental change strategies in schools.

Safe Streets Baltimore
Wednesday, August 15, 2018 | 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. EDT
This webinar will introduce Safe Streets Baltimore, a public health and evidence-based initiative to reduce shooting homicides in select neighborhoods of Baltimore City. Safe Streets Baltimore hires credible messengers to mediate conflicts in the McElderry Park, Cherry Hill, Park Heights, and Sandtown-Winchester neighborhoods of Baltimore City. Credible messengers are from the communities they serve and have similar trauma histories of the high-risk youth the program targets. These individuals have credibility from their own pasts that commands respect in the most violent communities of Baltimore City, and they can leverage their relationships in a way traditional law enforcement and human service efforts have not.

  1. Identify two ways how the Cure Violence Model can be applied to assist in defining high-risk participants
  2. Describe the importance of credible messengers
Tobacco Use Disparities: Efforts to Understand and Eliminate Excess Among LGBTQ Individuals

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+) individuals are disproportionately impacted by tobacco use because of higher prevalence rates and reduced access to trusted care. The Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) and their partners have prioritized addressing LGBTQ+ health and reducing tobacco use among this community. 

In this webinar, participants will get a first-hand look at the PADOH in their utilization of momentum from discussions and data to address tackle statewide goals and objectives around decreasing tobacco-related disparities, including partnerships with medical schools to improve training around LGBTQ+ health needs and culturally competent/responsive care.

Using Self-Assessment Tools for Personal and Professional Development

This webinar will describe five popular self-assessment tools (True Colors®, StrengthsFinder 2.0, DiSC®, EQi® and MBTI®), the information provided by each assessment and how it can be used, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each assessment. The presenter will also describe how individuals can access many of the assessments online.

Preventing Opioid Misuse: Health Education Campaigns & Curriculum

According to CDC, overdose deaths due to opioids has quadrupled from 1999 - 2015. Health education professionals have a critical role to play in confronting this public health epidemic, which claims approximately 116 lives each day. This webinar will feature a new national communications campaign, The Truth about Opioids, to educate youth and young adults about the dangers of opioids and how to get help. The campaign builds on Truth Initiative's highly successful efforts in reducing the number of teen smokers. This webinar also will feature a new SOPHE curriculum, POPPED!, for public health undergraduate and graduate students and other 
evidence-informed resources regarding opioid use disorder prevention and treatment.

Learning objectives:
  1. Describe at least three elements of the multi-channel communications campaign, The Truth About Opioids, which can be integrated into a health education plan to prevent and reduce misuse of opioids among youth and young adults.
  2. Identify at least two SOPHE resources that can be used to train professionals and the public about opioids prevention and misuse.
  3. Describe how health education specialists can become involved in addressing the opioids epidemic in their state or community.
