August 2018

Happy August!

We hope this finds you well and enjoying some of the simple pleasures that summer has to offer.   We are fortunate here on Long Island to have a bounty of fresh local produce from our many farmers markets and farm stands that stretch out to the east end.  Nourish your family's brains and bodies by taking advantage of the wide variety of organic fruits and veggies available.

To our students: make the most of the remaining weeks of summer...unplug and read a book; get some fresh outdoor exercise and enjoy our natural environment. Studies show that free and unstructured play in the outdoors boosts problem-solving skills, focus and self-discipline, as well as reduces stress, aggression and increases happiness.

Fill the coming  weeks with healthy fun with the family, like a sunrise run on the beach; take in an outdoor concert; dine alfresco; try a yoga class in a park or on the beach.  Enjoy this special time of the year!

Yours in health,

Dr. Keri Chiappino and Dr. W. Brent Reynolds

School and Social Anxiety

It's August and the back-to-school commercials are a not-so-subtle reminder that summer is winding down and the new academic year is just around the corner. For many kids, the anticipation of the beginning of school is exciting --a new adventure, perhaps with new friends. For others, it's a time of incessant worry about the impending social and academic challenges that lie ahead.

School-related anxiety can affect a wide range of ages, from the youngest preschooler to the university student. Headaches, stomach aches and nausea can be signs that a child is suffering from anxiety.   Social anxiety is more than just having occasional nervousness or simply being shy. It is an intense fear of social situations that can be crippling. Oftentimes, we find the underlying cause for anxiety to be dysregulated brain waves.   Brain-wave training through neurofeedback can help balance the brain, improve function and relieve symptoms.

For our BrainCore grads, "brain-boosting sessions" can help ease the transition and any anxieties that may be surfacing as September draws nearer. And for those new to BrainCore neurofeedback therapy, it's not too late to begin a program to help improve focus and attention or overcome challenges like social anxiety. BrainCore neurofeedback training can help your child get on track for the new academic year.

Greening the Home Environment

spring_cleaning.jpg
We may not be able to control the outdoor living environment, but we can certainly take steps to reduce our family's toxic load indoors by choosing natural products that are safe and effective.

Many cleaning products like foams and sprays designed to disinfect and make counter tops gleam actually contribute to indoor air pollution, causing short-term respiratory or eye irritations, and potentially long-term illnesses like cancer.  Other well-known cleaners are filled with endocrine disruptors that can produce birth defects and heighten the risk of certain cancers.  In fact, Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) recently reported that 23 common household products tested positive for 1,4-dioxane, a manufacturing byproduct that is not readily found on the products' labels, and one that is deemed by the Environmental Protection Agency to be a likely carcinogen.   Not only has the insidious chemical been found in cleaning and personal care products, it has also been detected in Long Island's drinking water supply.

Green your home environment by choosing non-aerosol cleaning products that contain only natural ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar and essential oils like lemon or other citrus.   These green products are an effective alternative to chemical-laden cleaners, and have the added benefit of leaving behind a fresh and inviting scent.  Young Living's Thieves all-purpose cleaning product line provides a deep clean without dangerous or synthetic ingredients.

Lastly, ditch the phthalate-containing air fresheners and candles which can be absorbed by the skin and breathed into the lungs. Instead, purify your indoor air quality by adding some English ivy, spider and/or dragon houseplants to each room. Give your home environment an added boost of freshness with aromatherapy diffusers which disperse safe, fragrant essential oils into the air.

...And Detoxifying the Body

cheerful_old.jpg
Do you suffer from fatigue, muscle aches, frequent headaches?  Did you know these symptoms can be attributed to hidden chemicals in shampoos, deodorants and makeup?

Becoming more aware of what we use on and ingest into our bodies can help improve our health and well-being.  First and foremost, read all labels!  Check out your personal care and beauty products.  Can you pronounce the ingredients?  Do you see any red-flag ingredients like parabens or triclosan that can disrupt hormone function?  Make the switch to organic products that utilize plant-based minerals to support your health while helping to enhance your natural beauty! (Tip: Check out the Savvy Minerals makeup line!)

Incorporating foods into your diet like cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, kale), green teen, grapefruit and berries not only help to nourish the body, but also help purge toxins that accumulate in the body.  Drinking 8-10 glasses (avoid plastic bottles and cups!) of filtered water each day helps maximize these detoxification efforts.   Have you heard of wolfberries? Hailing from China, these powerful superfruits provide vital minerals, vitamins and antioxidants to help support energy levels, normal cellular function, as well as  whole-body and normal eye health.   A daily dose of wolfberry-rich Ningxia Red by Young Living helps to energize, fortify and revitalize.

Having a regular exercise routine promotes a healthy body and mind, enabling the lymphatic system to do its job and cleanse the body of toxins, while reducing stress that often bogs down the mind.   Studies show that regular exercise also reduces insomnia and enables deeper sleep.  Researchers believe that deep sleep clears out harmful toxins from the brain, a process that may reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease like dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.
