As I prepare to retire from AgeOptions, I am struck by the opportunity we offer to the community providers who are the heart of our service to suburban Cook County older persons. The Area Agency on Aging is the most accessible and interested organization for advocating and supporting those who are delivering services at the community and home care levels.

Surprise Jon Lavin with Retirement Party
The upcoming 14th annual AgeOptions event, Celebrating Leadership, will honor Jonathan Lavin and his 40 years leading AgeOptions. But convinced that one retirement party isn't enough, AgeOptions staff, Board of Directors and Advisory Council members, and Lavin family members surprised Jon at a retirement party September 17.

AgeOptions Receives Grant to Reduce
Food Insecurity and Nutrition Risk
AgeOptions is one of five agencies nationwide to receive the U.S. Administration for Community Living's Nutrition Grant. The two-year grant will enable AgeOptions to develop and implement a referral system with health care providers to decrease the prevalence of food insecurity and increase the likelihood that patients who are experiencing food insecurity and/or are at nutrition risk will receive and act upon referrals to community-based resources. Participating health care providers are Rush University Medical Center and Oak Street Health.

AgeOptions Advocacy Task Force Meets
With Representative on Older Americans Act
Members of the AgeOptions Advocacy Task Force met with U.S. Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi in August to talk about the upcoming reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA). First enacted in 1965 and reauthorized every decade, the OAA was the first federal level initiative aimed at providing comprehensive services for older adults.

SMP Program Aimed at Preventing
Health care fraud doesn't just cost taxpayers money. It can result in Medicare beneficiaries being denied services or equipment they need. Since 1997, Illinois Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) has worked to educate and empower consumers throughout the state to prevent, detect and report health care fraud.

From Visiting Grandchildren to Raising Them:
Support and Services Are Available
The Scotts (we have changed their name), who are in their late 50s, were enjoying retirement. The north suburban residents enjoyed going to concerts and the lakefront, and visiting their grandchildren in Arizona. But their lives changed a year ago when the grandchildren, a 12-year-old and 10-year-old twins, came to live with them.
