Greetings Fellow Readers!
We want to take a moment to talk about an in-store promotion that just ended. Though, really, it was less of a promotion and more of a statement of principle. We're speaking of Banned Books Week.
Every September, bookstores and libraries come together to remind customers, patrons, and communities about the importance of Free Speech. Because every year there are instances of school districts, PTAs, and governments--as has been happening for as long as there have been school districts, PTAs, and governments--trying to impose their values on others, telling them what they can and cannot read, which books they can and cannot display, and which authors should or should not be given a platform.
If you were in our stores over the last few weeks, you saw displays with police tape and "wanted" signs, with bestselling books and timeless classics, and in one spectacular display (thanks to Portia Graf, our retail manager in Aspen Grove), a book on fire.

These displays are meant to remind us that ideas, stories, and language are not dangerous. things to be feared. They are the lifeblood of a democracy. Tattered Cover carries nearly 150,000 volumes across our stores, and we can absolutely guarantee some of those volumes will offend you. It doesn't matter who
you
are. Conservative, liberal, Christian, atheist, gay, straight, tall, or short, we have books that will reflect your values, and books that will not.
That's the point.
We believe it is our responsibility -- our mission, really -- to present the widest diversity of viewpoints possible, so that all members of our community can be edified and entertained in the way and manner they choose. We also believe that by presenting a broad spectrum of views, we foster an environment where people can communicate with one another, and learn from one another.
It is our job to recommend books; it is not our job to pass editorial judgment on them.
So why post this now, after Banned Books Week has ended? Because protecting Free Speech is not a once-a-year endeavor, limited to some clever displays of books. It is an going and never-ending struggle to remind one another that the free and unhindered flow of ideas is the bedrock on which our society is built. George Washington knew that when, in 1783, he wrote: “If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”
Well said, Mr. President, well said.

"What an inspirational book. This was an incredible journey to go on. What an impressive and inspirational woman. I loved what she accomplished but I think I loved her determination and resilience the most. Also, while this was clearly a middle grade read, she didn't hold back about her family's hardships and tough times. Some of those stories, especially when it came to the domestic abuse and machismo attitudes, were rough and difficult to read because of their harsh nature. I loved how honest she was and how she had a 20/20 hindsight and way about explaining the cultural differences and historical differences of the time. It made the story more understandable and all the more relatable. Again, this book is written at a middle grade level with some basic sentence structure and language but I would recommend this to all young women. It's an honest journey, full of cultural relevance, and with a can-do attitude that I loved." --
