News & Reviews
Greetings Fellow Readers!

We want to take a moment to talk about an in-store promotion that just ended. Though, really, it was less of a promotion and more of a statement of principle. We're speaking of Banned Books Week.

Every September, bookstores and libraries come together to remind customers, patrons, and communities about the importance of Free Speech. Because every year there are instances of school districts, PTAs, and governments--as has been happening for as long as there have been school districts, PTAs, and governments--trying to impose their values on others, telling them what they can and cannot read, which books they can and cannot display, and which authors should or should not be given a platform.

If you were in our stores over the last few weeks, you saw displays with police tape and "wanted" signs, with bestselling books and timeless classics, and in one spectacular display (thanks to Portia Graf, our retail manager in Aspen Grove), a book on fire.
These displays are meant to remind us that ideas, stories, and language are not dangerous. things to be feared. They are the lifeblood of a democracy. Tattered Cover carries nearly 150,000 volumes across our stores, and we can absolutely guarantee some of those volumes will offend you. It doesn't matter who  you  are. Conservative, liberal, Christian, atheist, gay, straight, tall, or short, we have books that will reflect your values, and books that will not.

That's the point.

We believe it is our responsibility -- our mission, really -- to present the widest diversity of viewpoints possible, so that all members of our community can be edified and entertained in the way and manner they choose. We also believe that by presenting a broad spectrum of views, we foster an environment where people can communicate with one another, and learn from one another.

It is our job to recommend books; it is not our job to pass editorial judgment on them.

So why post this now, after Banned Books Week has ended? Because protecting Free Speech is not a once-a-year endeavor, limited to some clever displays of books. It is an going and never-ending struggle to remind one another that the free and unhindered flow of ideas is the bedrock on which our society is built. George Washington knew that when, in 1783, he wrote: “If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”

Well said, Mr. President, well said.

Feel free to drop us a note to let us know what you think, and please say hello if you see us in the stores. And as always, thank you for supporting Tattered Cover.

Len and Kristen

21 Books You Should Read This October

Sarah Perry, Melmoth (Custom House) I hate horror movies (yes, I'm a scaredy cat) but I love books that fall into the surreal/eerie/uncanny category, which I think is what I'll find in Melmoth. Sarah Perry's new novel follows a translator with a...

Adult V.I.B...
by Terrance Hayes

Terrance Hayes is at it again in this National Book Award-nominated collection. In a sequence of sonnets that all share a title, Hayes grapples with the folding and unfolding of time and consequence that's gotten us to this fraught political, and undeniably personal, moment. His words feel OH SO GOOD knocking around in the brain, all the while slyly underlining so much of what's crazy-making in our world today. Beautiful, formidable, and, ultimately, full of love -- "If you think a hammer is the only way to hammer / A nail, you ain't thought of the nail correctly." Let Hayes explain. -- Lainie Formby, Adult Book Buyer

"What an inspirational book. This was an incredible journey to go on. What an impressive and inspirational woman. I loved what she accomplished but I think I loved her determination and resilience the most. Also, while this was clearly a middle grade read, she didn't hold back about her family's hardships and tough times. Some of those stories, especially when it came to the domestic abuse and machismo attitudes, were rough and difficult to read because of their harsh nature. I loved how honest she was and how she had a 20/20 hindsight and way about explaining the cultural differences and historical differences of the time. It made the story more understandable and all the more relatable. Again, this book is written at a middle grade level with some basic sentence structure and language but I would recommend this to all young women. It's an honest journey, full of cultural relevance, and with a can-do attitude that I loved." -- Mikaley Osley, Marketing and Event Manager

"Rainy Cain is 17. Her mother does not speak to her or even look at her, though they live in the same house, and her father is dead. Her mother can't hold a job and they are all but broke, in the deep cold of a Minneapolis winter. When Rainy comes home to find her mother has killed herself, she begins to find out that the entire past she thought was hers was a lie. An oddly empathetic cop responds to the scene and is determined to help her.Her “dead” father and another man have broken out of prison in search of the money from the armored car heist her mother and father were a part of years earlier. Rainy is kidnapped by her father to help him find the money. Wohlsdorf makes a vibrant, live wire of a character, not soon forgotten. The tale is told in cinematic clarity. Definitely worth a read and should provide fruitful discussion matter." -- Mark Lehnertz, Aspen Grove Retail Manager

"I don’t watch scary films and I don’t read ghost stories but The Clockmaker’s Daughter is a different kind of ghost story. Interweaving characters pass through time and space in an enchanting, and enchanted, house in the English countryside, Birchwood Manor. Is it the people or the house that is haunted? As always, Kate Morton has created memorable characters and crafted engrossing paths for them to trace. The Clockmaker’s Daughter begins in 1862 with the love story of an artist, Edward Radcliffe, and his muse Birdie Bell, the daughter of a clockmaker, and culminates in unexpected ways in the present. Make a cup of tea, curl up in a comfortable chair and travel with archivist Elodie Winslow as her interest in a leather satchel, and the sepia photograph and sketchbook with a drawing of a distinctive house it contains, lead her to secrets 150 years in the making. I hope you enjoy the journey. I did." -- Margaret Noteman, Aspen Grove Book Buyer

by Leif Enger

“From the fated flight of Virgil Wander’s Pontiac into the frigid waters of Lake Superior to an encounter with Rune, an enigmatic kite enthusiast searching for word of a long-lost son, and other interactions with the citizens of Greenstone, Minnesota, Leif Enger’s new novel is a most welcome, albeit quirky, story of words and people lost and found. Lovers of Peace Like a River, rejoice! Enger is back with another enchanting and enriching tale of community and revival, with his ever-deft touch of magic and grace. A perfect remedy for those whose hearts ache from our present reality, Virgil Wander is a treasure to be shared with all readers.” -- Mark Nichols, Bank Square Books, Mystic, CT

New in paperback...
by James McBride

“Sometimes after I've read a great book by an author, I judge. When I picked up a copy of James McBride's new collection of stories, Five-Carat Soul , I was prepared to be disappointed; how could he top The Good Lord Bird? Was I ever surprised, in the best way possible! These stories have all the magnificent qualities of his National Book Award-winning novel: quirky, poignant, and hilarious characters amid myriad situations in life, and humanity at its most human presented in beautiful writing. A couple of multi-story combinations read like novellas, and satisfied my craving to know more about the most interesting of the characters. McBride has set the bar high once again.” -- Mamie Potter, Quail Ridge Books, Raleigh, NC
