The year 2019 has been a very interesting year for all, globally, in so many divergent ways. Pandemics, climate change and other major global phenomenon are leading concerns that continue unabated. From the Global One Health paradigm comes opportunities for convergent solutions at the interface of humans, animals and the environment. This year marked significant progress in our vibrant partnerships, training, research, science implementation, outreach and capacity building engagements. Our momentum is greater than ever, but the complexity of global issues we need to tackle remains a steep mountain to climb. We call upon all stakeholders to continue stressing the vital importance of mutually-beneficial, high impact capacity building that the world needs today. Thank you for your partnership in 2019. We wish you all happy holidays, and may 2020 bring more opportunities to make greater global impact!

Global One Health initiative awarded National Institutes of Health Gold Medallion

A long time strategic partner of the Global One Health initiative (GOHi), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded GOHi its Gold Medallion in recognition of their valued collaboration in building global capacity to address complex health issues the world is facing today. GOHi and the NIH recently convened a joint health capacity building conference in Ethiopia that brought together 35 institutes from eastern Africa and nine U.S. universities that receive NIH funds, specifically through its Fogarty International Center. Also in attendance were key NIH leadership including Director Francis Collins, and Fogarty International Center Director Roger Glass, who awarded the medallion to GOHi Executive Director, Wondwossen Gebreyes.

Federal University of Paraíba leadership meeting

GOHi met with Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) Rector Margareth Diniz and three Pro-Rectors to strengthen the existing partnership between Ohio State and UFPB. The two are collaborating on a project funded through a Program on Internationalization (PrInt) grant that was awarded to UFPB by the Brazilian Higher Education Council (CAPES). A workshop that included speakers from state and federal foundations for research, such as FAPESQ and Finep, also was organized by the Pro-Rector of Research office.

Global Water & Food Safety Summit

GOHi Executive Director Wondwossen Gebreyes presented at this year's global scientific meeting held November 19-21 at the University of Maryland. The objectives of the summit were to (1) more deeply explore how to leverage the fusion of microbiological water sampling and whole genome sequencing on a global scale; (2) identify and mitigate the scientific and policy challenges surrounding effective water sampling and timely whole genome sequencing analysis; and (3) ensure that appropriate and optimal collection, isolation and characterization methods are fully validated and in place to support this global public health endeavor.

GOHi's Monthly Webinar reminder

Join us for engaging webinars on the third Thursday of every month. The webinar on December 19, 8:30-9:30 a.m. EST, will feature presentations on Enteric pathogens / antimicrobial resistance surveillance data from Kenya (Robert Onsare) and Frequency and diversity of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae recovered from untreated wastewater impacted by β-lactam antibiotics Cefotaxime and Meropenem in Ohio, USA (Rachel Too). All are welcome to attend in A100H Sisson Hall (1920 Coffey Road) or join online through Zoom.

Advancing higher education for science through partnerships

Following a request by the Ethiopian government through the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, representatives of selected public universities and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) from the United States organized a one week visit and strategic discussions in Ethiopia. The universities involved in the planning included The Ohio State University, Texas Tech University, Oklahoma State University and Indiana University. Attendees were able to engage with Ethiopian Ministries to determine how U.S. universities can partner on the defined needs in Ethiopian higher education and help mobilize resource to support the agenda.

African Innovation Week

The First African Innovation Week was celebrated at the African Union Headquarter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from October 28-November 2 to create a platform that gathers innovative African startups to come together and share their experiences and to work together for a sustainable, mutual and inclusive development. GOHi Executive Director Wondwossen Gebreyes gave an opening speech on "Health Innovation for Africa's Transformation." The session also created an opportunity to network with different stakeholders including minsters, scientists and industry and health professionals.

Welcome Shemljash Zeleke

Shemeljash Zeleke received her bachelor's degree in accounting and finance from Addis Ababa University. In her last position at the Women and Health Alliance International, she worked in the Finance and Administration office. She joins Global One Health initiative's regional team in eastern Africa as finance and administrative assistant.
