A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER
Reflecting on Six Months of Measure T
|
December is for me a time of reflection: a chance to look back on our accomplishments as a City and the dramatic steps forward we have taken thanks to our residents and the passage of the Measure T sales tax.
From deferred maintenance and infrastructure improvements to advances in technology that allow us to serve our residents better, we're addressing deferred projects and strengthening our future as a premiere City.
I'm proud of what we have accomplished in just the last six months and looking forward to more great things in 2020. Here's a snapshot of Measure T-funded accomplishments since money became available in July of this year.
- Hired 22 of the 31 Measure T positions and another four positions are very close to official. This includes police officers, dispatchers, firefighter/paramedics and several key vacant administrative positions.
- Ordered our new Fire Engines and expect delivery in spring.
- Staffed the first of two new Medic Squads.
- Kicked off PulsePoint response and are preparing to unveil our new Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) program. Both of which are outlined below.
- Implemented the Body Worn Camera Program with Murrieta Police Department
- Unveiled OpenGov and OpenData, public portals into City data as part of our commitment to increased transparency.
- Had our first meeting of the Measure T Citizens Oversight Committee.
- Started our residential Slurry Seal project with 50% of City streets and launched an upkeep cycle that will extend the life of our streets and keep Murrieta looking great.

MURRIETA FIREFIGHTER LOSES HIS BATTLE WITH CANCER
Public Services Planned for Firefighter Dean Hale
|
 We are deeply saddened by the loss of local firefighter Dean Hale, who died November 22, 2019, after a long battle with cancer. Hale served with Murrieta Fire & Rescue since 2007, and for the City of Alhambra for 17 years. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Audrey; their twin girls, Brittany and Stephanie (27) and son Wyatt (19); his parents, Tom and Jodi Hale and his sister, Dawn.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the
Firefighter Cancer Support Network.

Mobile App Empowers Everyday Citizens
|
 PulsePoint is a free mobile app that works in tangent with our 9-1-1 dispatch. It connects CPR/AED-certified bystanders with a person experiencing a sudden cardiac arrest event in a public place and directs them to the exact location of the closest automated external defibrillator.
Nearly 60 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims don't get CPR before professional help arrives, and chances of survival drop 10 percent for every minute without CPR. By adopting PulsePoint, Murrieta Fire and Rescue (MFR) hopes to increase cardiac arrest survival rates by empowering everyday citizens to provide help while MFR is in route.

AFTER THE TENAJA FIRE: PREPARING FOR RAINS
City Takes Steps to Reduce Post-Fire Erosion
|
More than 100 Conservation Corp workers lined the hillsides above Copper Canyon late November as we completed a large part of the post-Tenaja Fire mitigation work. This includes placement of 7K lbs of bagged gravel and 10 acres of a specialized hydro-mulch, a bonded fiber matrix, on the highest-risk hillsides with the goal of reducing erosion and debris flow. The City is also placing metal K-Rail and fencing below key sections of the hillsides. This work follows a comprehensive assessment by erosion and geological experts and a meeting with residents in the area.

Slurry Work Continues with Early Rain Interruptions

Despite several early-season rain days, our residential slurry seal work is moving forward. There's a 50/50 chance we will be improving your street this round, so make sure to visit
www.MurrietaCA.Gov/streets for maps and two-week schedules. We have also added a helpful FAQ list, with many questions we have been getting from residents. This is the first of an ongoing cycle to keep our streets in top shape. If your street is not included in this round, it will be addressed in 2021. And if we skip your street due to rain, it will be rescheduled this round.

Expansion Brings 14 EV Charge Sites to City Hall
|
 In response to growing electric car sales, the City has added six new charging stations at City Hall and the adjacent Senior Center. Each site now has three level 3 fast chargers and a dual head Level 2 charger. When combined with the existing dual head Level 2 chargers at City Hall and the Library, there is now space for 14 cars to charge simultaneously at the City sites.
All chargers will be accessible to the public 24 hours a day. This $700K project was paid for through grants and Motor Vehicle Subvention funds (AB 2766). While we assess use, fees will be free for the first two hours and $3/hour thereafter. The City's ultimate goal is to run the stations at cost.

Get Musical With Library Instrument Loans

Your Library has a variety of musical instruments available for checkout and recently added several new instruments including a banjo, mandolin, rainstick, singing bowl, bass guitar, frog guiro, and mini DJ mixer. The collection also includes a tambourine, electronic keyboard, bongo drum set, ukulele (concert and tenor), electric guitar, acoustic guitar (junior and full size), vinyl record player, accordion (mini and full size), snare drum, cajon (wooden box drum), glockenspiel, and percussion instrument sets for children. Adults can check out one instrument for a two week period. Empty instrument cases are located near the New-Book area and patrons can take the empty case to the Reference & Information desk and staff will check out the instrument to them. If you've always wanted to learn how to play the mandolin but never had the opportunity, here is your chance! Stop by the Library or call 951-304-2665 for more information. Sponsor a Tree for a Family in Need

Make this holiday season incredible for a less fortunate family and explore your creative side by sponsoring and decorating a tree for the Festival of Trees.
- Step 1: PURCHASE
Pay $25 at the Murrieta Senior Center or online by November 29, 2019. Pick a theme then start purchasing decorations and lights.
- Step 2: DECORATE
Grab friends and family and head to Town Square Park to decorate the tree any time after 9 a.m. on December 7, 2019. Have the tree ready for viewing and judging by 5 p.m.
- Step 3: DONATE
We will announce the winners the same evening at around 6:15 p.m.
Award categories include Best Theme, Most Unique, Best Use of Lights, and Best Holiday Spirit. The tree, with lights and decorations, will be donated in your name to a family in need this year.

Holiday Magic is Coming to Murrieta

Festival of Trees, Tree Lighting, and Holiday Parade
On
Saturday, December 7, the City's Festival of Trees and Tree Lighting event will take place at Town Square Park from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Hometown Holiday Children's Parade is returning as well with step off beginning at 5 p.m. This is how Santa will make his grand entrance for the evening.
There will be vendors, displays, horse-drawn carriage rides, and pictures with Santa, all leading up to the official lighting of the City's tree shortly after the conclusion of the parade and the announcement of the parade entry winners.
Santa's Stops
Santa, along with his peeps, will be making his rounds to Murrieta neighborhoods from December 10 - December 19 between 5:30 and 9 p.m. Residents need to listen for the announcements and the song "Here Comes Santa Claus" then go to the nearest white star painted in your neighborhood.
Santa will be on his sleigh collecting toys and canned food for needy kids and families in the area. Various Christmas characters will be on hand as well for photos and everyone gets a candy cane! To find your neighborhood's white star, check out the listing on our interactive Santa Map.
Holiday Toy and Food Drive
The City of Murrieta's annual toy and food drive is seeking donations of non-perishable food and new, unwrapped toys and gift cards to assist local families in need this holiday season. In addition to Santa picking up food and toys at his neighborhood stops, you can drop off food and/or toy donations to any of the following locations between November 25 and December 20:
- Murrieta Community Center - 41810 Juniper Street
- Murrieta Senior Center - 5 Town Square
- Any of the five Murrieta Fire Stations
- Murrieta Police Department - 2 Town Square
- Murrieta City Hall - 1 Town Square
Holiday Home Decorating Contest
Register your home or block for the Murrieta holiday home decorating contest by visiting the City's website at www.MurrietaCA.gov/holidayhome. Enter by 5 p.m. December 4. Maps of homes will be available on the website by 5:30 p.m., December 5. As in previous years, the public will get to vote on the winners! Online voting will begin December 5 and run until noon on December 12. Winners will be announced the following day by 5 p.m. Entries must be within the Murrieta city limits to qualify.
Letters from Santa
This year parents will be able to download letters from Santa to print out in the comfort of your home. Simply go to the City's website at www.MurrietaCA.gov/holidaymagic to view the letter options. Letters will be available for download starting Monday, December 2, ending Friday, December 20. In addition, call the Santa Hotline (951) 461-6086 to get a special message from the big-guy himself!
Alternative Recreation Program Event
The City's Alternative Recreation Program offers activities for special needs adults over 18. On Friday, December 13, from 6 - 9 p.m., we will host the "Making Spirits Bright!" party and potluck at the Community Center's multi-purpose room. Admission is $2, with caregivers free. Please bring a $10 gift card to exchange. Call 951-304-7275 for more information.

Murrieta All-Star: Barry Bonds
|
 Barry Bonds is a former professional American baseball player and Murrieta resident. Bonds was born in Riverside and later moved to Bear Creek. He played twenty-two seasons in Major League Baseball with the Pittsburg Pirates and San Francisco Giants.
Professionally he received seven league MVP awards, eight Golden Glove awards, 12 Silver Slugger awards and 4 All-Star selections. Over his career, Bonds became the first player to have over 500 home runs and 500 stolen bases. What a great record!
