National Merit Scholarship Program
Lancers earn prestigious academic recognition.
Congratulations to nine Lake Park students who have earned academic recognition through the
65th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program
. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.
Semifinalists
: Seniors Andrew Miller and Anthony Slade have been selected as Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Competition. They were selected based on test scores of the 2018 PSAT/NMSQT and represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. The approximately 1
6,000 semifinalists nationwide have the opportunity to continue in the competition for 7,600 Merit Scholarship awards worth $31 million.
Commended Students
: Seniors
Allison Banayati, Chad Berkich, Anishi Patel, Milan Patel, Michael Paterala, Jenny Petrova and Jacob Wortsman
have been selected among
34,000 Commended Students nationwide who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for Merit Scholarship Awards, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million juniors who entered the 2020 competition
and may become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
National Hispanic Recognition
: Seniors Alexander Alkanat, Luis Arias, Jacob Perez and Matthew Pullman have been selected for the 2020 National Hispanic Recognition Program award. The College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) identifies academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students. Each year, the NHRP honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT.

College and Career Counseling

Explore TCD: November 6
Any current sophomore and junior students who are interested in learning about the Technology Center of DuPage (TCD) are invited to attend a field trip to TCD on Wednesday, November 6. TCD offers a variety of elective course programs (some of which offer opportunities for college credit and/or industry certifications) that can prepare students for post-secondary education and career paths such as automotive, construction trades, healthcare, public/human services and engineering programs. The field trip will last about half of the school day (approximately 8:30 to 11:00 a.m.) and students will be responsible for any applicable classwork. To participate in the TCD Explore Day field trip, a student must complete the online registration form and submit a completed permission form to the Counseling Office by Wednesday, October 30. Women in Construction Day: November 8
Lancers are invited to a
Women in Construction Career Exploration Day
on
Friday, November 8
at the Technology Center of DuPage. Hosted by Northern Michigan University's Construction Sciences Department, the event is open to females in grades 9-12 and will include hands-on exposure to the construction industry. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in activities such as woodworking, welding, virtual reality, electrical installation and construction management. Students are responsible for securing their own transportation to/from this event and a parent/guardian should still contact the Lake Park Attendance Office to report this absence. A limited number of seats are available. To participate, students must complete the online registration form and return the applicable permission form to the Counseling Office by Friday, October 18.
Evening Office Hours
In order to provide additional opportunities to assist Lancer families with the postsecondary planning process, Mr. Ziemba will be hosting evening office hours on October 17 and 24 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the area located inside the main entrance of West Campus. PSAT/NMSQT Testing for Juniors on October 16
Non-attendance day for seniors; East Campus will have a SMART day.
On Wednesday, October 16, all Lake Park High School juniors from the Class of 2021 will take the PSAT/NMSQT exam at West Campus. This is a required attendance day for all juniors,
and students must be present in order to receive a score. The College Board does not allow for a make-up PSAT/NMSQT due to absence.
On this date, senior students from the Class of 2020 will not attend school. East Campus students will operate on a SMART day schedule.
This exam is a practice test in preparation for the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) in April 2020; however, it's also the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students who receive excellent scores on this test have the opportunity to earn prestigious status as National Merit Scholars.
On test day, students should arrive by 7:15 a.m. and bring a current photo ID, two #2 pencils (mechanical pencils are not allowed) and an approved calculator. Morning buses will follow their normal route times, and will return students home upon the completion of testing at approximately 11:30 a.m. Please encourage your student to check the LaunchPad for their room location prior to arrival.
To help prepare for this exam, students in their English classes received an official PSAT/NMSQT student guide, which provides testing strategies and a list of approved calculators. Please encourage your student to take the practice test included in the student guide prior to October 16. Additional test prep resources are also available online.

2020-21 Superintendent Search Process
Board of Education publishes Superintendent Profile based on staff, community input.
Lake Park's Board of Education is faced with the important task of hiring a new superintendent for the 2020-21 school year to replace current Superintendent Dr. Lynn Panega who will retire on
June 30, 2020.
To assist with this endeavor, a search firm specializing in assisting Boards of Education in their search for a new superintendent was hired. School Exec Connect recommended conducting an audit of District 108's strengths, challenges and goals, as well as determining the attributes necessary for a new superintendent to possess to be successful at Lake Park.
Earlier this fall, the Board of Education invited staff and community members to participate in focus groups, attend an open forum, and respond to an online survey to assist in the development of a leadership profile for the new superintendent search process. All survey responses were anonymous and confidential.

to hear former Lake Park
Lancer Dave Schrader share his scariest ghost stories on Thursday, October 17 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the East Campus Dice Auditorium. Dave has made quite a name for himself in the paranormal world, and currently is the lead investigator on the new hit show on Travel Channel, The Holzer Files. His presentation is designed to not only educate the audience on ghost hunting, but also show documented evidence of the paranormal. Admission and chills are free!
Guests over 12 are invited to "Haunted Asylum" on Friday, October 25 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. in the East Campus Dice Auditorium when the Lake Park Thespians present their annual haunted house. Admission is $5.00 per person with unlimited opportunities to walk thru.

Night of Fine Dining and Theatre
Tickets are now on sale for the Educational Foundation's annual fundraiser.
On Friday, December 13 the Lake Park Educational Foundation will host an exciting evening of fine dining and theatre at Lake Park's East Campus. Guests will enjoy an elegant winter tasting menu prepared by Lake Park culinary students and reserved seating for the holiday play, A Christmas Story. Guests can also bid on a wide array of silent auction items throughout the dinner. Tickets are on sale now! Visit the Night of Fine Dining website.
The LPEF is seeking in-kind donations for its silent auction that evening. Items such as restaurant and entertainment gift certificates, sports memorabilia, and travel accommodations are being sought.
