Each year, the High Holy Days frame a uniquely intimate and yet communal experience of God in our lives, unlike any other. This year, as incredible injustice surrounds us, we will come together in prayer and find strength to pursue a good, sweet new year as a bold spiritual community of resistance and love. We look forward to sharing the Days of Awe. 

Kol Nidre Services tomorrow, Tuesday, 10/8/19 begin at 6:00 pm
at the Javits Center, 11th Avenue at 35th Street.

- Doors open at 4:00 pm to provide time for everyone to go through security. -
- Please cooperate with the professional security process. -
- All bags are subject to inspection. -
- Large bags and backpacks are not permitted in the sanctuary space. -

On-site Registration and Will Call tables open at 4:30 pm.

If you received tickets for Rosh Hashanah, 
these are your tickets for Kol Nidre as well,
so please bring them!

- Tickets are not required for Yom Kippur daytime services. -
 
CBST's offices at 130 West 30th Street will be closed 
from Noon, Tuesday, October 8 through Wednesday, October 9,
as clergy and staff work to prepare Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services.

Description: In this interactive course, we will study the Mishna, an early Jewish code of law, to learn what this crucial text is and get a taste of the breadth of its content. We will explore the relevance and importance of the Mishna throughout Jewish textual history through today using primary sources and group discussion. Participants will learn how to approach Mishna on their own and strengthen their journey through Rabbinic texts.

Description: Join us for this 8 week class as we explore and delve deep into the Jewish Festival cycle. Each week, we will travel through the year learning about the origins, customs, and evolution of our Jewish holidays and traditions, beginning with the Jewish calendar itself. Reading excerpts from the Torah, Talmud and commentaries, as well as examining the rituals, arts and foods of Jewish communities around the globe will illuminate this exploration of time and space. Registration for this class includes a copy of The First Jewish Catalogue.

Intended Audience: Exclusively for Adult B'nai Mitzvah students.

Description: This collaborative, guided, Torah study time will empower students in our adult B'nai Mitzvah program to produce their own Torah content. We will work together as a class and in small groups to explore their Torah portions from a variety of angles and interpretations, learning how to find meaning relevance in these ancient texts. By the end of the course, the participants will have the skills and confidence to produce their own divrei torah.

Description: CBST's Lehrhaus Judaica Adult Education programs offer exploration of Jewish text, prayer, Hebrew, holidays & festivals, lifecycles, and more. Whatever your level of Jewish knowledge, you will be enriched by participation. Registration for this class includes a copy of a Hebrew language study textbook.

Mishpachah is a CBST social and cultural group, diverse in its membership and informal in nature, attracting those over the age 55 while welcoming all for a truly inter-generational experience. Join CBST to make our 7 hakafot, 7 circles of singing and dancing with our Torahs. We celebrate the completion of the year-cycle of reading Torah, reading the last blessings of Deuteronomy and the first awakenings of Genesis. Dance and see the entire Torah unrolled before your very eyes. With our nation's future at a critical point, what's the best way to get involved? Join us at Democracy Sunday to find out! The day starts with Senior Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum in dialogue with Congressman Jerry Nadler, Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten. We'll continue the conversation over lunch, then learn more in afternoon breakout sessions, including a review of New York State politics by New York State Senator Brad Hoylman. Registration and full program details coming soon!  Presenters, including elected officials, are confirmed at the time of this message, but given the dynamics of the current political situation we cannot guarantee the appearance of any particular speaker.

As part of CBST's new initiative to end mass incarceration , a congregation-wide book club will launch with a discussion about Bryan Stevenson's book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. Dr. Regina Stein, Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum at Eldridge St., comes to CBST for a deep discussion exploring the creation of the Modern Orthodox and Conservative Jewish movements in America and the ways in which men argued over the place and roles of women, as these issues split communities and congregations and sometimes ended up in American courts. From birth through high school, CBST provides Jewish learning opportunities for children and their families. Babies, toddlers, and preschoolers sing and celebrate Jewish holidays and heritage in Alef-Bet Shabbat and Aggadah Adventures. Limmud B'Shabbat (Learning on Shabbat) is our twice monthly education program for school age children. B'nai mitzvah training, teen trips, theatrical experiences, holiday celebrations, service days are also part of our program.

Introduction to Asylum Law: A CLE Course for Attorneys
Thursday, November 14, 6:30 - 8:00 pm, at CBST
CBST offers an accredited New York continuing legal education (CLE) course, free of charge for attorneys who will volunteer at least 10 hours at the CBST weekly Pro Se Immigration Legal Clinic (Wednesdays at 6pm), or at another approved venue. This course provides an overview of the law of asylum, with specific reference to cases based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The course grants 1.5 CLE credit hours in Areas of Professional Practice. Taught by Noemi E. Masliah, Esq., Principal of The Masliah Firm, CBST Board Member, and Co-Chair of CBST's Sanctuary Team. One of the most immediate and effective ways to reunite immigrants in detention with their families is by paying their bail; the detainee is then released to pursue their legal case while living in their community instead of behind bars.  Make your fully tax deductible contribution by check with memo: CBST Bail Bond Fund or  give online here . P roceeds support New Sanctuary Coalition's "Life Bond Fund" which has already helped free 25 immigrants from detention.

Community members assist immigrants and asylum seekers with asylum applications and other steps on their paths through our labyrinthine immigration system. New volunteers are always welcome! CBST is a proud partner with the New Sanctuary Coalition, RUSA, and SAFE in this work.

The Psalms/Tehillim Project Continues 
In Judaism, it is traditional to recite psalms/t ehillim  in times of fear, mourning, calamity, and in joy and celebration. As a community, we are reciting the entire book of 150 psalms each day. To participate (all are welcome), email Tasha Calhoun with "Psalms/Tehillim Project" in the subject line. Choose a psalm that is meaningful to you or the CBST clergy can choose for you.
