The Readings for this Sunday
Proper 24 Year B
Our opening lesson is the poem of the Lord’s servant who suffers and bears the sins of many. The passage is part of the fourth and last of the “servant songs” which form a portion of the Book of Isaiah written when the exile was coming to an end. The servant is sometimes thought to be an historical individual or an idealization of the faithful of Israel. This “man of sorrows,” “despised and rejected,” “wounded for our transgressions,” whom the Lord at last vindicates, is perceived by Christians to be a prefigurement of Jesus.
A hymn of trust in the Lord. God will guard and deliver the one who loves and seeks refuge with God.
In this New Testament lesson we hear how through obedience and suffering Christ reached the perfection of his destiny and was designated by God to be the eternal high priest. The high priesthood of Jesus is the great theme of the Letter to the Hebrews. Like the high priests of the old covenant, Christ is chosen from among human beings and so has sympathy with human weakness. But he is the Son and has now been named high priest forever. He succeeds Melchizedek, a royal and priestly figure from antiquity, and has been made the source of salvation for all who trust in him.
In the gospel story Jesus’ followers still expect that his way will quickly lead to a state of glory in which they want special places. Jesus tells them of a different path of discipleship. First Jesus and then his disciples must experience the cup of sorrow and the baptism of death. They are not to live and act like worldly rulers. They must lead in servanthood. Their example is Jesus, who as the Son of Man serves and gives his life.

A Prayer for Vocation in Daily Work
Almighty God our heavenly Father, you declare your glory and show forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the earth: Deliver us in our various occupations from the service of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in truth and beauty and for the common good; for the sake of him who came among us as one who serves, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen. ~BCP 261

A final service at St. Anthony's in Desert Hot Springs
Friends of St. Anthony of the Desert,
|
|
I am writing this as the Area Missioner of the Desert Region of the Diocese of San Diego.
As many of you know, the building on Mountain View has been sold. The new owner, who will be worshiping and serving Christ from that holy and blessed space is the Spanish Assembly of God Church of Cathedral City. The sale is scheduled to close on October 18th - this Friday.
There will be a final service at St. Anthony's on October 28th at 4:00 p.m.
That will be the time to give thanks for the ministry of the St. Anthony's Community since their beginning. It will be a time to remember the people and clergy who have passed through her welcoming doors. It will be a sacred time to say farewell. As Christians, even our farewells remind us to look for resurrection and the leading of the Holy Spirit in new directions.
The St. Anthony's Columbarium has been relocated to the campus of St. Paul in the Desert in Palm Springs. The Columbarium is located on the East Side of the Church building. There is a space for meditation and reflection surrounding it. The last features to be added are a statue of St. Anthony the Abbot, and a bench donated by St. Anthony's.
Please come to 19990 Mountain View Rd. on the 28th as our community of faith honors St. Anthony's.
Faithfully,
Fr. Andrew Green
(Rector, St. Paul's in Palm Springs)

Almighty God, to whose glory we celebrate the dedication of this house of prayer: We give you thanks for the fellowship of those who have worshiped in this place, and we pray that all who seek you here may find you, and be filled with your joy and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Your gift to St. Hugh's makes a difference. It allows us to be the fulfillment of this prayer. It allows us to be open so that "
all who seek you [God] here may find you, and be filled with your joy and peace."
It is always the right time. Donate to the mission and ministry of St. Hugh's. Your gifts--of time, talent, and treasure--make it possible to be present in Idyllwild so that we can both invite and then "enable questioning, open-minded people to discover for themselves, the significance of Jesus Christ."
