Volunteers Needed: Amity Committee Co-Chairs
|
|
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Amity Committee Co-Chairs for the 2021- 2022 Academic Year
The Amity Committee helps coordinate and support six Spanish-speaking interns who come to assist teachers and students for a full school year. This is a year-round position with most work done in the spring (interviewing potential interns and recruiting host families) through summer when host families are confirmed and interns arrive just prior to the start of school.
Other main jobs include:
- Serve as a coordinator between the Amity interns and the the school administration and teacher mentors.
- Act as a school coordinator for Amity International, make sure paperwork is updated and turned in on time
- Recruit, place interns with, and support host families
- Recruit, manage and support liaisons (a person who works on the committee to help support individual interns)
We will have two open co-chair positions at the end of this school year that will have to be filled as the Amity interns are a critical part of our students Spanish immersion experience.
If you are interested in volunteering to co-chair the Amity Committee or have any questions, please contact our current co-chairs, Sara Henson and Kristen McSherry, at amity@puestadelsolpta.org.

PTA Board Spotlight |
|
Adam Droker, Co-President
Current Role, and how long have you been in it? I have been co-President for one year and was Treasurer (Payables) for 2 years prior to that.
What do you most like about your role? In addition to running meetings, I really enjoy getting to view the organization from a 50,000 foot view. I like the ability to set the direction for future years of our PTA.
What skills are helpful in this role and how much time do you usually spend in the role per week? The ability to delegate and work well with a partner who compliments your skills is critical. I have been lucky to have Andrew as my Co-President. We are both working parents making our schedules already tight. Knowing that I have someone who does what they say they will do is critical. Similarly when I commit to do something I make sure to get it done. A basic understanding of parliamentary procedure is important to helping facilitate the meetings in an efficient manner.
What is something you do that may not seem obvious to others? I own and operate multiple businesses including WaterRock, a Registered Investment Advisory firm in Bellevue and The Vertigo Club, a private cigar club in Seattle. I am also very active in the community. In addition to being Co-President of the PTA, I volunteer as an umpire for Bell East Little League and I am President-Elect of the Bellevue Kiwanis club. The biggest objection to volunteering that I hear is that there isn't enough time. This year our PTA put together some stellar programs. Going into next year, we will be bringing back some popular programs that could not happen during the last year and a half. In addition to volunteers for the board, we will need help with programs like Amity, Math Olympiad, Science Fair, etc. Being a part of the PTA has been a truly rewarding experience and I would encourage every parent to find a program they are passionate about and get involved with that to start. Name a fun PTA memory. I am not saying this because my wife and sister-in-law coordinated it along with Carmel Sasaki, but the Ceramic Paint Events we did in partnership with Creatively Yours in Crossroads were a blast. I laughed the entire time I made my hand turkey for my mother. Name one of your family's favorite go-to places and why: Favorite Restaurants are India Gate in Eastgate and La Chingona Taqueria on 148th & Main Street (the taco truck that did Dining for Dinero with us this year). Favorite vacation place at this point is literally just going anywhere! I don't think I ever need to take a Staycation again. Anything else to add? I want to thank all of our volunteers and those I have served on the board with. Your dedication to our children is awe inspiring. Thank you!
