Colleges Report on Impact July through September

Each quarter, CCC Maker colleges report on metrics. These are posted on the CCC Maker website and can be viewed by quarter, college or cumulative results. In the first quarter of 2018-19, some results included:

• 6,263 students accessed college makerspaces
• 289 digital badges were awarded to students
• 82 employers were recruited
• 75 students completed internships

Symposium on Sustainability Planned for Makerspaces

CCC Maker Colleges are encouraged to sign up for the Fall Symposium on Sustainability that will be held at College of the Canyons on Friday, November 30.

Webinars Connect Community of Practice

CCC Maker Technical Assistance Providers, Deborah Bird and Salomon Davila, offer CCC Maker webinars to enable colleges teams to learn from each and continue their progress in building community, developing curriculum, offering student internship experiences and creating inclusive educational makerspaces. These webinars are shared on the CCC Maker website under the resources tab.

What is Happening in the College Makerspaces 

Sierra College developed a noncredit series of courses leading to a "Entrepreneurship for Makers" Certificate of Completion that was approved by the College's Curriculum Committee and Academic Senate, and the Chancellor's Office. The courses are: (BUS 800) New World of Work, 21st Century Skills, (BUS 801) Starting a New Business, and (CET 804) Prototyping for Product Design.

College of Alameda held a grand opening for the Fab Lab on September 27; the 1900 sq. ft. space hosts digital fabrication equipment including CNC Routers, 3D printers, heat presses, transfer printer, desktop cutter and an embroidery sewing machine.

Golden West College developed "Dream Big" and shared the video funded in part by CCC Maker that demonstrates how the college guided 120 middle school students through the design thinking process to design a better backpack.

Folsom Lake College professors Zack Dowell (Makerspace lead) and Diane Carlson (Sociology) are iterating the 2.0 version of their course Making Social Change. Working in the makerspace, students explore social movements and the ways that they use tools to enact change.

Sacramento City College is offering a new class MAKR 299 (Everyone Can Code), has installed a Glowforge laser cutter and Tormach metal CNC machine, is offering workshops in 3D resin printing and Arduino basics, and has added a weekly movie night to attract students to the makerspace.

An American River College Design Hub makerspace intern used the laser engraver to create a Spanish pronoun game board.

Moreno Valley College brought together students, faculty, administrators and industry professionals to explore a wide set of ideas for the iMAKE Innovation Center and to create a shared vision and build consensus for adoption of initial design principles for the makerspace.

Foothill College re-instituted MakerMonday where students can make a cool fun project in less than an hour. 

Allan Hancock College's makerspace partnered with Hancock's Winery & the Culinary Arts Program to host the inaugural Harvest Festival Makerspace on Friday, October 12, that was attended by 100 people and built awareness across campus.

• Maker Ed Convening 2018 (10-19 & 20), San Jose, CCC Maker presenters Deborah Bird and Carol Pepper-Kittredge focused on the CCC Maker college process of coming together as community of practice in Year 1, college implementation and customization in Year 2, and leveraging for sustainability in Year 3.
