TABC Open House
Draws  Record Crowd
From Three Dozen Communities
On Sunday morning, October 21, TABC held its annual Open House for prospective ninth grade students and their parents. We were pleased to welcome over 750 guests/attendees from over three dozen communities!

Students and parents learned first-hand about TABC's inspiring and engaging limudei kodesh and general studies curriculum at our Academic Fair and were exposed to our diverse extra-curricular and co-curricular opportunities as well. Parents and students had the opportunity to attend a myriad of sessions panel presentations where the floor was open questions.

College Guidance Holds
Interview Workshop
The interview can be an important part of any honors application to college. While most state college no longer interview their students, many private schools and especially the more competitive programs provide their students with interview opportunities. To help prepare our students for their Ivy League and honors programs, TABC held a college interview workshop on Wednesday night. Over 20% of the seniors stayed after school to meet with the two presenters, Daniel Altman who does interviews for the University of Pennsylvania and Michal Kaufman who does interviews for MIT. Each presented the students with tips and helpful suggestions for the process. The presentation was followed by mock interviews with those who wanted to participate. A similar workshop will be held later in the year for students preparing for their Yeshiva University interviews. The workshop was organized by our Director of College Guidance Dr. Garry R. Katz.

Sam Bradin,  Holocaust Survivor,
Shares His Story
Rockland County resident, Sam Bradin, was the sole survivor of his immediate family; his parents, four sisters and a brother all perished in the Holocaust. When his town in Poland was invaded by the Germans, he was ten years old. On Thursday, October 18th, the senior elective Holocaust Studies class had the privilege of meeting Sam and listening to his incredible story of resilience and survival. Students  sat amazed as they heard this almost 90 year old retell his early childhood and wartime experiences with such clarity and detail. Sam concluded by encouraging the students to ask him questions-and they had so many for him! There are so many unimaginable memories which Sam shared, and now the students are faced with the challenge of incorporating them into the "Bare Witness" theater project which their teacher, Mrs. Reichardt, and TABC drama teacher, Mrs. Lopkin, have initiated this year with the class. Many thanks to Mr. Bradin for his tireless commitment to sharing  his story with the next generation of witnesses, our students.
Rabbi Moshe Benovitz
Addresses Freshman & Sophomore Classes
TABC's freshman and sophomore classes were privileged to hear from Rabbi Moshe Benovitz, International Managing Director of NCSY, on Thursday morning. Rabbi Benovitz spoke to the boys about how to find the Avraham Avinu within themselves, and how to be the best Jews they could be. His animated presentation engaged the talmidim using jokes, sports and cultural references, all to help the boys connect to and apply deeper analysis to specific passages of Chumash and Rashi he presented. For example, during the summer, when we have time off, do we spend it playing, or bettering ourselves? Rabbi Benovitz has the pleasure of interacting with many TABC students each summer, as he leads NCSY Kollel. It was an engaging and enlightening shiur which really had the students thinking deeply.
Josh Cohen '07 Highlights the Basics of Investing
One integral component to the senior elective Introductory Economics and Financial Literacy class is the time that students spend  learning  from guest speakers- especially when they are TABC alumni. On Wednesday, Oct.17th, students enrolled in the course received an introduction to the basics of investing  from TABC's alumnus, Joshua Cohen '07, who initiated TABC's original investment club. Even while as a student in TABC, Josh was already very interested in the world of finance and investments. Mrs. Reichardt was Josh's teacher at TABC and they have stayed in touch over the years as Josh completed his education and began his career. As hakarat hatov  for his former teacher and TABC, Josh visits Mrs. Reichardt's Economics classes twice each year. Now that Josh has introduced the basics to the classes, the students will go into greater depth and discussions on those principles in their classwork.  During the second semester Josh will return to acquaint students with more sophisticated investment strategies, which he has learned and developed throughout his own experiences studying and working  in the world of finance. When the class ended, students crowded around Josh in the hallways, filled with further questions. Everyone  enjoyed his talk, and several students raised many insightful  observations and questions.  Many thanks to Joshua Cohen for his dedication to TABC. We all look forward to his next visit!
Junior Night Out
On Thursday night the Junior class had their annual night out. After a quick pizza dinner in school they made their way to the Prudential Center in Newark to watch the Devils play the Predators. They were joined on the trip by Rabbi Stone and Rabbi Kessel, their grade dean. The game went into overtime and although the Devils lost, the grade had a great time.

TABC Conducts Baseline Testing to Aid in Concussion Diagnosis
At TABC we take our athletics very seriously but safety will always come first.  Consistent with this belief we were happy to be able to run mandatory baseline concussion tests for our student athletes.  On Wednesday night, October 23rd, immediately following Maariv, Dr. Danit Macklin PT, DPT, Director of the Balance and Concussion Therapy Center, ran an ImPACT test for TABC Student Athletes.   Baseline testing using the ImPACT neurocognitive test allows players to have an individualized snapshot of many areas of brain function that can be affected in the event of a head injury.  This provides medical professionals who work with athletes after an injury to have a much better measurement of recovery and when the player is really ready to return to his sport safely. Dr. Macklin remarked "Most high schools across the country are providing baseline testing for their athletes, however, TABC is among the first of the local yeshivot to do so.  Your school has demonstrated incredible initiative and concern for their students by starting a concussion management program and baseline testing for the students."

Coaches were present at the time of the test to ensure that their teams were taking the test seriously and professionally.

Yitz Rabovsky, Athletic Director at TABC said, "At TABC our coaches demand 100% effort from their players on every play, and as a result we need to make sure that their safety is always the first priority.  I am proud that we, as a school, are leading the way in ensuring proper head safety for our student-athletes."
