On this Sunday, when we recognize those new members who have joined the church in the past several months, we will all gather - Members new and old - to consider the meaning of Membership in this, our chosen community.
MUSIC NOTES Upbeat Gathering Music will be performed by Dorothy Wright, who will also join the thriving Community Church Singers on two very different songs about community and welcoming: Hands Across the Aisle and Come and Sit By My Side.

  • NU-BLU AT COMMUNITY CHURCH CONCERTS The Community Church Concert Series kicks off its new season with Siler City-based rising stars Nu-Blu, Sat., Nov. 3, 8 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Individual and Season tickets available online and after Sunday services. Fabulous desserts and coffee/tea available at intermission! The concert series is a fund-raising and community-building endeavor that has raised thousands for church improvements. Come join us! Volunteers for parking and concessions welcome! Enjoy food, music, and bidding! Over 150 items, services, and events will be auctioned off in the Silent and Live Auctions. Check out the catalog.   • HABITAT FOR HUMANITY STP  Habitat for Humanity is building homes for Seniors! The Share the Plate collection on October 28 will support the construction of 24 townhomes for seniors in Hillsborough. Homeowners will be in the Jones building following the service to talk more about this project. Not able to make it October 28? Send your contribution to the church office. Make checks payable to The Community Church of Chapel Hill UU with "Habitat for Humanity" in the memo line.  
  • TAX CHAT THIS SUNDAY Church Treasurer Andrew Wright will host an informal conversation about potential tax benefits and mechanics of END-OF-YEAR DONATIONS to the church Capital Fund, either in fulfillment of your pledge or Just Because. Not a substitute for professional financial advice, but it can be helpful to compare questions and experience with others. IRS? QCD? RMD? Appreciated securities? Let's talk! The meeting is Sunday, October 28 at 12:30pm in the Straley Room.
  • IFC DINNER Fri., Nov. 2nd is the next time our church will be cooking and serving dinner at the IFC Community Kitchen. Helpers are needed to assist with cooking in late afternoon and to serve during the dinner hour. Check the list on the Kiosk in the Coffee Hour to get the exact times and sign up.   • LET'S TALK TURKEY! Just in time for Thanksgiving gatherings, trained Sanctuary for Dialogue team members present Talking across the Political Divide with Friends and Family. This workshop teaches skills for constructive conversations between people who disagree politically, with a chance to practice. Kirby Room, Mon., Nov. 12, 7-9:30, or Sat., Nov. 17, 2:00- 4:30.   • MINISTERIAL REVIEW SURVEY The Committee on Ministry is charged by the Board of Trustees to review the minister's performance annually and gather the congregation's input on his strengths and/or areas for improvement.   • NONFICTION BOOK DISCUSSION FOR NOVEMBER On Saturday, November 17, at 10:30 in the Kirby Room, the Nonfiction Readers will discuss Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations, by New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman. The book focuses on the accelerating trends of technological change, globalization and climate change. Ed Steffes will lead our discussion. The Readers meet on the third Saturday of each month; new members and drop-ins are welcome. Click here to contact the group.
  • TOWN HALL REPORT AVAILABLE The October 14 Town Hall was an instructive, collegial exchange of information and feedback among the Task Force leaders and some 60 members of the congregation.   • WELCOMING CHILDREN IN THE SANCTUARY Children are a wonderful gift to this community. Children are always welcome to worship in the Sanctuary. To support little ones during the service, we will now offer Busy Bags (pouches with fun activities) and Busy Boards (coloring and writing activities) as well as soft toys for our youngest worshipers. Stop by the new Children's Welcome Table in the Sanctuary (across from the Art Table near the Sound Room).

  • RALLY FOR THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY A group of young people, including an 11-year-old UU in Florida, is suing the federal government for its failure to take action against climate change. The historic Juliana v. United States court case is set to begin on Oct. 29. Join us at 3 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 28 at the federal courthouse in Raleigh (1 E. Edenton St.) to support the young plaintiffs. ECO and the Love Team are organizing car pooling leaving at 2 p.m. Email Ruth Gibson or call 919-259-2894. Click here for more info.
  • WHERE DOES YOUR FRUIT COME FROM AND AT WHAT COST? Documentary focuses on local and ecological cost when supermarkets feature cheap tropical fruits such as pineapples, bananas, and kiwis.   • KNOW AND DEFEND YOUR RIGHTS Seminar focus on interconnection between anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, anti-immigrant/anti-refugee bigotry. Speakers: Azadeh Shahshahani, former Coordinator Muslim/Middle Eastern Community Outreach ACLU-NC, now Executive Director of Project South; and Manzoor Cheema, founder of Movement to End Racism and Islamophobia (MERI). 7-9 p.m., Monday, October 29, Duke's Rubenstein Library, Holsti-Anderson Family Room 153.   • ACADEMIC FREEDOM DAY: THREATS FROM INSIDE AND OUT Speakers Joan Scott and Nancy MacLean; panelists Gene Nichol, Erika Wilson, Mark Dorosin, Julius Chambers, Elyse Crystall, Sandy Nonini, Sarah Birken, Sherryl Kleinman, Michael Behrent; discussion led by Erik Gellman and Jay Smith. 5:30-7p.m., Thursday, November 8 and 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Friday, November 9, UNC's Hyde Hall (4th building from East Franklin Street, directly opposite US Post Office).   • ART IN THE SANCTUARY The art in the sanctuary in September and October will be pieces from the Zimbabwe Artist Project, art made by (mostly) the women of the Weya region of Zimbabwe. See information about the project on the artists' table in the sanctuary. To purchase a piece please see Marni Goldshlag. Payment is only by check made out to the church with "ZAP" on the memo line.
  • LECTIO (SACRED READING) MEDITATION GROUP meets at noon every Friday in the Commons.  We use readings from poetry and the wisdom traditions of the world's religions as prompts for reflection and sharing.  No need to sign up ahead of time.  Please join us.
  • MEDITATION Want to explore learning to meditate or developing your own mindfulness/meditation?  Our group members would be happy to meet with you individually and share experiences. Join us Wednesday to set up a one-on-one discussion or call Delia Keefe (919)357-3510 or email deliakeefe@gmail.com. Please join us for silent meditation in the Sanctuary Wednesday evenings from 7:15-7:45pm.
