October 2018
Dear Friend:

As October comes to a close, we're proud to announce that we've been honored by Bank of America as this year's recipient of its annual, San Diego-wide Neighborhood Builders ® Award.

For added flair, the $200,000 award was made "live" on KUSI-TV's Morning News program on Oct. 10, at the Copley-Price YMCA in City Heights.

Our sincere thanks to Rick Bergman, BofA's market president, for this prestigious honor, as our mission of serving the under-served continues. In the photo above, that's KUSI host Allie Wagner joining me along with Su Nguyen, chairman of the Little Saigon Business District, and Rick Bergman.

Special thanks, as well, to all who joined us at our 27th Anniversary LISC Gala on Oct. 23 at the San Diego Central Library.

By all measures, it was a huge success, bringing together our community's dedicated non-profit agencies as well as elected officials, civic and business leaders. Our guest speakers included author Rick Allen, who was one of the original guiding lights of AmeriCorps; and Maurice Jones, CEO of LISC.

Their presentations and the event itself were inspiring reminders of why we're so dedicated to our cause.

Founder
City Heights Coffee House

For Sterling Tran, owning and operating City Heights Coffee House (CHCH) brings her a daily sense of fulfillment, one that serves to reinforce her Christian faith.

In addition to serving a wide assortment of gourmet coffees and teas, CHCH is devoted to providing a safe haven for at-risk youth, including refugees. Now with five full- and-part-time employees, plans are to grow in coming months with increased hours of operation.

The inviting, brightly-colored coffee house also hosts a series of community gatherings, mixers and social events, including weekly discussion groups that welcome the homeless.

Before CHCH relocated to University Avenue earlier this year, LISC San Diego provided a grant to clean up an alleyway next to its previous locale, which has created an on-going relationship of support and direction.
